The new water pump on the recently rebuilt 340 does not leak while running. However, when I turn the motor over by hand with a breaker bar (clockwise mostly but at times a few degrees counter-clockwise) it leaks a significant amount. Weird.

Well it's junk then. Exchange it for another.

Funny you should mention that. This water pump is the replacement for the other previous new water pump that I found was defective even before firing up the motor (it had no curve built in on the bottom part to clear the harmonic balancer where it was rubbing). Maybe three is the charm?

It's hard to find any replacement maintenance parts that are any good.
" Value engineering" which is a term created by financial people.

Update: Added a pint or so coolant and took the vehicle out for its first real "road trip". A 90 mile romp from La Paz, Mexico to the outskirts of Todos Santos, Mexico (La Garita Restaurante). I ate a bowl of menudo (tripe) for brunch. The rebuilt 340 ran great on the freeway (2.71 ratio sure-grip), cruising at 2,500 rpm @ about 15.1 A/F ratio according to the AEM meter (closer to 14.0 A/F at idle). Did not notice any pinging along the way and the water pump did not leak any (like i stated in post #1, only leaks when motor off and turn the crankshaft by hand).
