Oversized screw holes, screws won't tighten up

Does anyone know of a trick to get screws to tighten into a mildly stretched hole? I am trying to install the rear view mirror and visors in my RR now that the headliner is in and I have some screws that won't tighten down correctly.
Would you hunt high and low for a suitable "oversize" screw or is there a new trick to teach this old dog...LOL

I have used small cotter pins before with good results. Open it up to a 90* angle. cut 1 end short and stick the longer end in your hole.

I have also used a small piece of steel wire bent into a J or L and inserted into the hole.
