Well hell I think I bit off more then I can chew on this one, but that's what you get when you buy a car sight unseen well live an learn I guess but you would think at my age I would have learned by now lol. anyway I think the coronet needs to be dipped to find out what I'm working with anyone know where I can get that done and how much I need to strip it down to do it, also how about a good paint an body shop that isn't gonna want my first born maybe just a leg for their work somewhere here in the san Gabriel valley area of so cal.thanks

I stripped my '68 Coronet by myself, down to metal, over the course of a couple months. You just need a good angle grinder, DA sander, and lots of patience. You can do it. And a decent place to do it. I stapled plastic from ceiling to floor in my garage, to protect the "man-cave" area, and it didn't matter. I got paint dust EVERYWHERE.

And THAT'S why I won't do body and paint here !! Besides the fact that I despise it.

It was kind of satisfying, and strangely therapeutic to have done it myself.

My 66 had several coats of paint and after spending a couple of hours on it with a disc sander, a buddy said to try razor blading it. I laughed but it worked!! Once the majority of paint was off, I DA'ed it down to bare metal with ease.

I've heard of people using razor blades with good success. I just can't imagine doing an entire car with it. These stripper wheels worked great.

Nice avatar jmpric!

Must be in the air! I stripped my 500 over the last 2 months too! I used aircraft stripper, nasty stuff but no dust. Now that I am block standing primer that dust is getting EVERYWHERE….

Tell me about it. I've been doing body filler/block sanding, but I have to move the car outside to do it. My garage is a tandem, so not a lot of room to move around. Yours looks pretty rust free, as mine was. Be happy you have a "normal" garage. I'm kind of enjoying the body work, strangely. I'm sure I'll feel differently after 100+ hours.

I am now in a roller coaster mode of the restoration now… the days I see moderate progress I am on a high and enjoying it… days that it seems like I take 1 step forward and 3 backwards I say what the hell was I thinking….

I had to rebuild my trunk lip and stop a few places of minor rust, I did learn I really don't like doing the metal work… If there was a aftermarket trunk lid available I would have bought it in a heart beat…

Yes I found that. One was bolt on and I think there was one that worked but it was $$$$ if I recall.

What size tires are on your car? I like that look.

Actually the trunk lid is only $199, but probably that same amount again for shipping. I bought a pin down hood from them and wasn't that thrilled. It doesn't line up very well, but then again part of that could be my car as well.

I changed to modern style wheels. Here's how it looks currently, just had some fun with different colored primers.
