Why not just always type or write " you are" instead of " you're"? They both have 6 characters in them.. Hardly seems to be a contraction to me.... I hated English-loved the teacher-----Always looking out the class room window wondering what car had those cool pipes on it that just went by.....MO

Texting has murdered the language for many people.
      Where u at ?
      Is that UR car ?
Really? How much time did you save by NOT spelling out YOU or YOUR ?

I never use the short versions of the words so common in the texting world. Prefer to spell it out correctly. Seems as though it’s mostly the younger crowd that has acquired that habit.

How about the fact that most of them can’t read the handwriting of us old timers? Is printing a sentence out faster or did they do that just to make things easier on the poor youngsters? Another lost art soon..... handwriting

Shortcuts in text messaging came about for more than one reason. First of all, early phones often had only number pads, and to reach a certain alpha character could mean pressing a certain number key several times. Also, phone plans without unlimited text included meant that longer messages cost more. Plus, early texts were limited, usually to 160 characters, or 140 on Twitter.

I don't like the short forms either but now that they're in place, I think they're going to stay.

When we came to Canada, on our way to the USA, in 1957, no one in the family spoke English at all. My brother was 7 and had to start school over. The first thing we did was learn to speak English, at all cost. My brother taught all of us after being in school all day. People made fun of my family all the time about our broken English and the families heavy accent. My brother and I have no accent, but both my parents went to the grave speaking very good English, but both still had very strong accents. There was a guy my dad worked with that went out of his way to wait for my dad to make a mistake in his English and then pounce on him and laugh, making my dad feel very uncomfortable and to be honest, it made him feel stupid. One day, after this happened again, I cornered the guy and explained to him that my family worked very hard, every day, in an effort to be good and true Americans. I asked him to give my family a break and move on. He laughed and made a comment about being a Nazi. I don't know if anyone really understands what it is to call a German a Nazi. To a German, at least in our home, it's like being called the N-word. I realized at that point that this redneck mother fucker was looking for what I gave him, a real good American ass whooping. I left him on the floor and never looked back. It was years before this guy would even look at any of us. He still thought that he was the real deal and we were invaders, fine with me, but, keep it to yourself.

A few months ago there was a women, here, from Mexico on TV explaining why her husband shouldn't be deported after being in this twenty years, illegally. After being here twenty years, she was speaking to the News reporters through an interpreter. Let me be clear here, to be in this great country, you have to become part of this great country. If you can't even take the time to learn to speak the language of the country you're in, you really don't want to be here for the right reasons. At the end of the day, it's just my brother and I now. I am, who I am, because of my parents. My brother and I buried two great AMERICANS in the last few years and proud of it. RIP.......

In the 70s and 80s, a word was used to describe something great.
                      Cool.
I still use it. It may be dated and not as great of a term as it once was but I still like it. Other words have come along to rival COOL.
Sick. That car is sick, dude!
                      Boss.
                      Far Out.
                      Groovy.
                      Bitchin.

The definition of "dude": "Dude means nice guy; Dude means regular sort of person." The usage of the word to mean a "cool person" ....... Hey Dude!!

...and another issue with "...and never looked back"...

If you are telling the story, then you are in fact, looking back.

Never looked back at him, not the event. At least in my story. If you were referring to me.

I’m late into this forum, but here’s my list:
Man cave. Don’t EVER refer to my shop as a man cave. That makes it sound like one of those places where a bunch of guys watch tv football and drink beer and fart. This is my laboratory or shop, where I build amazing things.

Open concept. My house has rooms. Lots of them. We like them.

Hardwood floors. Most places where I’ve seen that term used they were referring to pine or spruce that was installed when the house was built as an underlay. Nowadays it also frequently refers to laminate flooring which has zero wood at all in it.

And all the usual; like, barnfind, one woman owner, restored etc.
