Project Unicorn - 1968 Charger Restoration

Its an almost 50 year old car WTF do you expect. Its gonna have rust in all the usual places, unless its spent its life in the desert.
Whats your problem? I have restored 6 chargers full of rust...It was a general known statement.
Your are one sensitive person...lighten up Frances....

The OP is doing great work as I stated earlier....Yes, chargers in particular are the worst of the worst when it comes to rust...

Does anyone else in this thread than this limited poster MM, "DISAGREE"?

Moparnation74, what do you disagree about? Do you expect a 50 year old car to have no rust thru on it? Yeah thats right im sure in your mind, they were made to last forever back then lol. Thin gauge sheetmetal and damp and salty environments wrecked these cars. I remember seeing them in junkyards in new jersey in the 1980s with no floors left in them. Any 50 year old car especially unibody constructed ones are gonna be rusty by this time unless they were vehicles that spent most time in garages or the desert. The quality control back then sucked pretty badly too. But i'm sure you think the QC on em was top notch back then too.

Man you are on the wrong tangent.....

All 50 plus year old cars have rust NO SH## SHERLOCK...but chargers have and always will be the WORST of them all...

Enough with your bickering.....

Car is turning out great. Obviously me and Mr 74 have some sort of disagreement. Maybe i have taken his post the wrong way, but i have seen some really crusty assed A and E bodies as well. At 50 years old they all are all really bad by this time.

Justin is a good guy and has seen more than his fair share of rusty mopars. I'm sure this is just a simple misunderstanding...it's easy to take the intent of someone's comments the wrong way on these forums.

I love 68s and am glad to see a fellow canuck and coaster restoring her.

Nice resto !

Are you going T56 ? There is a BIG Tremex box on your trailer ^^

That is a YES on the second statement in bold...

Thanks! It’s a TKO 600. Really liked it in th cuda so going the same route with this car. OEM Pistol grip shifter, hydraulic clutch.

Great work Twalker! Your metal work is extremely accurate and neat. I just picked up a small sheet metal shear and press brake to assist in getting nice clean cuts for any smaller patch work i might have.
Keep up the great work, cant wait to see more!

Awesome work! I wish mine was in that "good" of condition when I started. I will definitely be following your thread. Great to see another maritimer restoring one of these.

The frame/chassis jig is complete, measurements and pictures taken ... this baby is ready for surgery!

Surgery has begun. RH rail out and put the new one in for a quick test fit - great fit! Next step is to clean up the areas that are staying, place for it’s final fit and tack it in! Progress!

Work continues ... both new rails and spring hangers are tack welded in. Just cut out the right side wheelhouse and have the new one in for a test fit.

Also saved the gas tank brackets/hangers and spare tire brackets and welded them to the new trunk floor. So it’s ready to go in once I finish up the wheelhouses.

Great work. What are you using for a spot weld remover? That is the most difficult task out of all this to me. I go through bit after bit even hi quality ones....

I rarely use the spot weld cutters, unless I need to save the piece underneath. I use a 3/8 drill bit and find it so much easier. And my trusty air chisel are what works for me.
