I have posted on other threads. One was about low compression and the other was about gunk and valve seals floating. The engine is a 71 440 hp. Idk much about it other than it hasn't ran in some time. My question is do I rebuild this one. Or get a remanded from a parts store. I've bought a 440 kit from paw in the past, but they are long gone. I kinda want to not dump more money then i need to. Im not familiar with the costs of machining since i went the kit route before. I know oreilys has one for around 2k. Has anyone gone the remand route and was it worth it?

you can do a build yourself for less if you search for some good pricing online.also, you should end up with a better quality product in the end, since you chose all your parts.just need to find a reputable machine shop and check there pricing.

I personally would rebuild what you have.
1. You can "control" the project. You are the "Program Manager"
2. You can operate within your budget and control your financial output month to month.
3. You can verify/ensure "quality control" over many aspects of the build. Get to know local machine shop. (remember, we "tip" the Pizza Delivery person more than we "tip" our local machinist)
4. Your existing 440 is worth something other than a $50.00 "core charge"
5. Many parts on your 440 are usable and good.
These thoughts are my opinion but I'd say to build yourself. Take special pride and interest in it and most importantly: You learn!
Think it over,
Sure: A Nice "Killer Wedge" From INDY would be swell, but it's also $$
"Super-bee_ski"
PS: There have been some sweet deals here lateley on Aluminum Edelbrock heads still new in box!

I wouldn't trust somebody else's reman any farther than I could throw it.

There are basic re-ring kits from Mancini's, Summit etc for $3-$400, with pistons for $6-$800. For $2000 total you could add a decent cam, light machining etc, and best of all know what's in it.

I thought about that too

I thought about the reman route and found what I thought were good deals from 4 companies. I emailed them and they never responded including one on this website. I then googled the company name and "reviews." Except for one, the others had lengthy and long reviews, all bad. That scared me into going with what I have and farming out as much of the work as possible (okay, almost all of it) and it comes up cheaper like everyone says.

What yall need to do is hook up with an experienced forum member near by as you can. Heck, I'd help any of yall out. I love meetin new friends. I got a shop tools and half a brain. If any of yall are close to middle Georgia, I'll be glad to help you assemble somethin.

Thanks for all the advice. Im going to a local shop today. :)

Talked to the machine shop, looks like its gonna cost $1683 with the heads i just bought, it would've been $800 more if they had to redo the heads.

How much?

Fatecaptured: is that the total price to rebuild your 440? The reason I ask is I'm going that route in the near, I hope, future, and that sounds good to me. Let me know how it turns out.

Thats their price for everything except assembly. They said it would cost $300 + to assemble the short block and $500 + for the long block assembled or $600 + for a everything including accessories. But they said if u know basic mechanics, don't rush, plasti-guage all the bearings, have a torque wrench, and a manual with torque specs. Then there's no reason to not assemble it your self.

PAW sells through Ebay now but it looks like they don't have much. Too bad because they had good parts for good prices years back. http://www.pawinc.com/

If this is your first build, it's a good idea to have someone around that's done it a few times. My first assembly was done without using any tools to measure with and even though it came out good, it could have just as easily come out bad. Now as a machinist, I've caught many mistakes by automotive machine shops. Having tools that measure piston/bore size is just as important as having something to measure bearing clearance and the list goes on. Do your research, ask tons of questions and go for it!

Yes Cranky, I still have a couple P.A.W. catalogs in my library of crap, lol. I purchased one of their kits back in '04 or '05. I ordered a 440 with a steel crank and flat top forged pistons. It came with 452 heads. I started assembling it then went through a divorce. Ex wife wanted to keep it. Cops were involved. Long story short, the build was completed by a mechanic back in '08.
I added main studs (arp). I did upgrade the cam and valve train with mancini's cam kit (509 new grind) and comp cams steel roller rockers and heavy duty push rods. Topped off with performer rpm . Also bought a msd pro billet distributor and 6al box. All said and done i have around 6k in the build.

I want to do this build a little cheaper.

PAW has ALL kinda stuff. That is if you're building an early Hemi. That is ALL they carry parts for now. Hot Heads is the East Coast early Hemi connection and PAW is the West Coast.

Yeah. I been away for a few years. Once i got internet i tried looking for their website. And found out they aren't in business or not like they were. Sux. Wish i had internet and knew about this site back when i started on the last engine build.

An early hemi and a 383 rusty? What they going in? I thought all the PAW was doing now is eBay? Kinda thinking about that 383 i pulled out of the coronet years ago. Idk what to do. Either way I'm looking at a large bill i reckon :(
