Removing the dash cluster.

Been sitting here for a bit now and decided to ask the pros. I want to replace the harness and update the ammeter in my ‘67 GTX. Pulling the dash seemed like a good idea but is proving more difficult than I expected. Is there a double secret way to roll it out of the dash frame?

The speedometer cable is usually one thing that makes it hard to get out. Need to take it loose before the dash will come out more than a couple inches.

It's all disconnected. Just won't come out of the frame.

Speedo cable. Wiring to ammeter, both sides. Large plug to printed circuit board. Could the headlight or wiper switches be hanging up on the dash frame? Maybe a wiring harness clamp still screwed in somewhere? The steering column dropped down. Its been many years since I took one out.... I do remember having to take out the bolts at the firewall so the steering column could drop all the way down into the driver seat. Is yours loose there, or just dropped down a bit from the dash mount?

Column is dropped. Everything is off the dash. It just won’t come out the hole.

I wish I could help, but am out of ideas. I found a cluster on ebay with pics of what the rear looks like. I still wonder if your headlight switch is snagged on the dash frame when you try to pull it out. I would remove the headlight switch and try it.... Here is the ebay link.

Sometimes they are tight coming out.

I just had a complete dash out of the car it was taking apart and it was so tight coming out I had to pry on it with a big screwdriver. Being out of the car I could see that it wasn’t hung up on anything but just tight fitting in the dash.

They are not much fun to put back in either - unplugging everything to remove is not bad but it’s a real challenge getting everything plugged back in on reinstallation.

With a new harness too. I bet it will be a challenge. I want to upgrade the ammeter as well while it’s out.
