Roadrunner or not??? VIN Question

I found another potential project car (1969 Roadrunner...no pics) on Craigslist, but was told that the vehicle has had all of the VIN (dash tag, build sheets, fender tag, etc) info removed from it and there is no title either.

The guy I spoke to said he looked all over the car and told me that he believes the VIN is RM21*9*2841301. I'm assuming that because the dashboard says Roadrunner (with the sticker) on it he made the assumption that the VIN starts with RM21*9* because if he really found that part of the VIN on the car he would have had the rest of the VIN for the type of engine and where the car was built. He said he found the 2841301 portion of the VIN on the car around the trunk area lip.

The other obvious problem is that the VIN, based on what he said, would be 14 characters long versus 13. I thought all the VINs for this year were 13 digit VINs.

He told me he bought the vehicle about 10 months ago from anouther person on Craigslist who said that he had received the car from a friend about 15 years ago. The car is basically a shell with a dash, steering column and suspension.

I'd appreciate any any all thoughts on what you think about whether or not this VIN is likely to be the real VIN and if you think the car is a Roadrunner or an old abused Satellite that was dressed up a bit to look like a Roadrunner.Also, any thoughts on how hard it would be to title this vehicle if I bought it (since it has no title). The very Best advice I can give you is two simple words.
"BUYER BEWARE"
If there is no VIN he is assuming it is a Road Runner, sounds like too much speculation to me, has anyone checked on top of the glove box liner for a build sheet ? I found three build sheets in my 69 Hemi Coronet R/T Convertible, one on top of the fuel tank (it was rough condition) another tucked under the rear seat springs, (decent condition) and my best copy was found on top of the glove box liner.:grin:

I agree it sounds suspicious. Check the radiator support. On the 69 cars the last part of the VIN was stamped somewhere under the coolant sticker. I have always seen the stamping read like this: 9G123456.

RR's are RM; Belvedere is RL; Satellite is RH; GTX is RS.

That's correct and it good information,:yes: ......It's stamped on the trunk gutter also, and I have heard of it stamped on drivers side A pillars behind the molding, but have never really looked, I will look on the R/T and confirm this.

Caveat emptor!!! no vin plate AND no title??? hmmm...sounds kinda fishy :edgy: RM21 would be a post (sedan) car that will help narrow it down a bit...there were no post GTX's and i'm pretty sure no sport satellites that had b pillars and yes VIN's are 13 digits :cheers2:

Is there anywhere on the vehicle (besides the VIN plate, fender tag and build sheet) that will have the entire VIN stamped?

Or, a location(s) on the vehicle where I can find the "first half" of the VIN (which I am defining as something like RM21H9...) and the location(s) where I can find the "second half" of the VIN (...A123456)? Will a vehicle have all of this stamped on it somewhere...maybe in different locations?

Also, the part of the VIN he said he found on the trunk gutter (...2841301 assuming that this is really part of the vehicle's VIN) is 7 digits long versus 6 digits (which is what I would have expected)...anyone have an idea on why this might be? He said the area had some corrosion and was difficult to clean up and read which may have lead him to mistakenly provide me with an extra number.

Also, which plants produced 1969 Roadrunners? I've been told only Lynch Road, Los Angeles and St Louis...is that all of them? If I can get him to find that portion of the VIN stamped on the car and it doesn't reflect the correct production plant, then I might be able to rule it out as a Roadrunner right off the bat

sound like a parts car , with no vin all you will ever be able to get is a state assigned vin , this makes the car worthless for resale .

Sounds like the "nays" have it...unless the guy can show me the entire VIN stamped on the vehicle somewhere (which I doubt), I'm going to pass.

Anyone know where I can find a $1000 - $3000 69 Roadrunner project car with a clean title? The last two (this one and the one from my other posting) both were in good shape and had good prices but both had VIN issues. Any leads would be appreciated.

If it has no V.I.N. tag or title and the hidden numbers are gone I doubt you could even get a state issued V.I.N. plate.

The hidden numbers will have the last 8 digits of the V.I.N. which are the model year, assembly plant and 6 digit sequence.

A 1969 RR V.I.N. has several choices for the first 5 digits they ALL begin RM then they can be:
For the body type
21=coupe
23=2 door hardtop
27=convertible

Finally the 5th digit which is the engine and there are 3 choices for a 1969
H=383
J=Hemi
M=440-6

There is no way to determine the entire original V.I.N. for this car with the V.I.N. plate, fender tag, title and broadcast sheet missing.

It sounds to me like these items may have been removed to rebody it to another car. Is the car rusty or heavily body damaged?

I know a guy in Detroit who has a nice `69 project for sale that is solid with no engine or trans. for $2500. It would probably cost you an easygrand to have it shipped though. PM me if interested and I will get you in touch with him.

I had a 70 Challenger R/T missing the vin tag but had the fender tag and all hidden numbers on the car was there.

I sold my Challenger to work on a 70 Coronet R/T and a few places to look for a hidden vin is at the package shelf it was stamped there.

I think I found one aroud the trunk area as well. Someone did say at the core support.

I would only buy it for parts if it has good parts sounds like someone wanted a drag car. Thats what happend to my Challenger R/T it was being turned into a drag car. I was lucky the guy never took the fender tag and through it away it was under the pile of parts along with the build sheet.

The above bolded words are the key for you being able to get a STATE issued V.I.N. tag because the FT has the complete V.I.N. on it that identifies the car legally. The subject car has nothing that shows the FULL V.I.N.
