Shifter Question - What are you using?

I'm sorry, goon, I didn't even realize you were running a 4 speed. Should have seen it.

No worries! Every response helps and the pic with your wife and car seat made my day! :)

Is that still the original boot on that shifter? First one I have seen other then the one I have been trying to replace for years.

Good Question! It's the boot that was on the car when I got the car... Now.. my car was not an original 4 spd but the tranny was out of a correct date coded 4 spd so that is likely the boot that came with it... did you locate one?

I'm pretty sure this car has a 71-72 shifter in it. It looks smaller/shorter than a 70 from the pic. I'd love to swap to a shorter shifter. The factory one is ridiculous.

That's exactly a pic I was looking for and I agree on both accounts.. I'm pretty sure that's the 71-72 shifter and that the factory one is ridiculous! Just scrolling through pics it always stands out like it should be in a semi! View attachment 227436

Hey Mike, I had the71-74 B body bench pistol grip in a 69 Dart and was a perfect fit. Should be the same in a B body.

Nobody appears to carry that boot and is the first I have seen other than the one in my 72. I know it is a factory part it has the Chrysler part number on it.

I have a pistol grip in my 69 but I had to change the mixer to a 70 model or my fist hit the dash shifting into 3rd. The 70 mixer had a shorter stroke. Hot Weather 006.jpg

Love that Story HT 413 and thanks for the Pic! No clue why she'd look unimpressed! bahahaha

I've been in talks with another member (youknowho) about making one for me if I send him a template. But I'm still thinking that 14.5" 71-74 shifter might be exactly the fit I'm looking for! Just wish I could find a pic of one in our Gen with a bench. This is the only pic I could find View attachment 227418

if the E Body shifter had reached that high, I would have left it in.

Thanks Rick! Sounds like I should be good to go. Now I'm just trying to find one that doesn't cost my first born!! Hope all is good with you Merry Christmas!

That's really good to know! Guess I should hold onto that then :)

I assume the E Body is probably the 11.5" ?? http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/huu-5388575/overview/

I've cut the stick right above where it attaches to the shifter mechanism. You shorten it or angle it back to your liking. Weld it back together It's all hidden under the boot.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's I used to bracket race my 4-speed 340 Dart that ran a best of 11.90's @ 113. But I used the Hurst Super Shifter with the t-type handle instead of a ball as boy I really liked it as I could power shift that Super Shifter real good. I dont even know if they still make the Super Shifter and I remember the shifter was only about 6 to 8 inches tall but if you want to speed shift it worked as good as the Mr Gasket Vertigate my buddy used. From what I'm reading online it says the 71-74 B-Body non-console version (the one I like 14.5") is commonly switched into A bodies with no issues but the 70 B Body had the long shifter and also had longer fingers to compensate for the shifter length.... I'm wondering if my 69 most likely has these longer fingers making this 14.5" shifter an issue.

In short I want to buy the 71-74 (14.5") and use it in my 69... Does anyone see any issue with that?

"Hurst reproduction pistol grip as used in 1971-74 B-body cars (also works in 1967 to 1976 A-body cars) requires use of bolt-on style shifter mechanism"

I just called the guys at Brewers and was that the only issue I "may have" is with the shifter coming back and hitting the bench due to it's shorter length but with only a 7" layback I don't see how that could be an issue?

mmhhmmm i would love to get a vertigate shifter

Trust me I don't think you would, I had one and it would be great if upshifting gears but come time to downshift it would be a real pain (not so much for street driving).

Wish I could help Goon but I have no experience with the old school 4 speeds.
