Shock eyelet size

Fellas, what is the right eyelet size for a rear shock of a 69 charger? I broke one the other day, ordered Munroes that are supposed to fit a big block mopar but found the top eyelet on the new shock is too small for my bolt. The old shocks’ eyelets are 5/8” and the top eyelet of this new Munroe is 1/2” I think.

Hey I’ve ordered 2 sets of shocks now from the local parts store. They’ve both come with the 1/2” top eyelet. Their computer is saying these are stock replacements for a 69 charger. Have you ever come across something like this? This is getting frustrating.

Gabriel 82131 have 5/8" sleeves. Parts books are listing the blue monroes as 1/2" for some reason.

They are claiming 12mm on some monroes, even smaller than 1/2"

Yeah. 1/2” seems to be the default. I just looked up the gabriel 82131 and it has a mount code ES27 which is 1/2” too. So I don’t know what hell to do! Weld the old shock back together haha

If it helps, the OE rear upper shock bolts on my ‘69RR are 1/2 x 2-3/4. I also used the stock replacement Monroe’s…..jim

It certainly helps. So does the bolt rattle around in the mount holes a little bit. The 5/8 bolts that are in there now seem to be the right fit. I tried the 1/2” bolt has some wiggle room

I have never seen 1/2bolts on a 68-70 b-body but that does not mean much. I just installed 4 gabriel classic shocks on my 1970 68 and 69 call for the same shock.

They fit this car perfect with 5/8" bolts. Purchased last week from rock auto, front and rear fit perfect other than rears being 1/8" shorter.

Sleeve should look like this, nos mopar are this size, set of kyb are this size to. It appears monroe went metric.

I’ve never poked around under a clean B body before. Now I know there’s been some funny business under my car. It’s undercoated plus dirty. I thought there were some boogery welds that looked out of place. For some reason the ends of the shock mount cross rail were cut off at the frame rails. And perhaps the shock mount holes have been tampered with.

That was caused by loose air shocks or no serrations on the washers, wallows the frame out, somebody added those tabs, but not a problem. 70 ft lbs on that 5/8 upper bolt.

Factory welds on that crossmember were pretty bad, many ripped out of the car with air shocks.

Thanks very much 4406bbl! I don’t think we have rockauto up here but I located some KYBs on a Canadian website. I just wrote to confirm the eyelet size. Fingers crossed!

I was wrong here, bolts should be 1/2", was drilling a bunch of 1/2 and 5/8" holes for transport brackets and screwed up. Kyb eye, has a thick sleeve, maybe could be drilled 9/16", no way it could go 5/8".

I appreciate the honesty. I’m starting to feel defeated though. I think I’ll try knocking the sleeves out of the bushings, and squeeze a slightly bigger one in them, even if I have to drill the rubber to make the sleeve fit. Whoever modified the car before royally screwed me over haha.

Depending on the eye size of the shock you may be able to use an energy suspension hourglass shock bushing. They can be bought with a 5/8" sleeve hole and with heat and lube the sleeve should press in. The ends of the bushing can be ground off if need be to get it in the crossmember, spreading the crossmember to get it in is better so the urethane compresses the sleeve better.
