Do I have to use gaskets at the axle retainer where it bolts to the brake backing plate and the housing flange?.............................MO

I purchased my green bearing kit from Dr. Diff. I did install the gaskets.

MO,
I would use the factory designed gaskets just to keep clearances as designed. Just like using a gasket at the differential housing to axle housing surfaces instead of smearing some silicone sealant on (thereby causing the axle shaft alignment to shift by the thickness of the gasket).

Does dr. diff also sell the axle seals? I couldn't find it on their site.

There are two gaskets that need to be used regardless of whether you use green or tapered bearings. The first one is the steel crush gasket that goes between the axle flange and the brake backing plate, felpro part 55032. If you are using tapered bearings then there is a foam gasket that goes between the axle retainer and backing plate, felpro 13800. For green bearings I don't know the part number of the gasket, but its a heavier paper type gasket, and that should not be used with tapered bearings as it will throw off your end play adjustment, that's why the foam gasket is used for tapered bearings, because it crushes under torque.

Yes, use both gaskets.

Mo I used all the oe gaskets but there's no end play adjustment with the 'greens'.

I just put these green bearings in a short while ago ( actually another mechanic) I now have to pull the differential and hope the gaskets can be re used. More in the next post.......................MO

I agree 100% I have a new diff to housing gasket. ...........................MO

Thanks much, especially for the felpro numbers.
My question comes from the fact that the stock, right side end play adjuster is eliminated. If I understand correctly , the green bearing is held in place by the pressed on collar. The center block in the diff. is no longer used for the axle ends to butt up against, and the buttons that go into that block are no longer needed. There is no longer grease in the cavity where the bearing is, as they are sealed bearings. So, since setting end play is no longer important,do I need to use a certain thickness of gasket under the retainer flange, or can I seal it with silicone? I don't remember what the green bearing kit used for that retainer flange gasket........................MO

Let's make this real easy. Thrust block removed, steel shim (gasket) in between axle housing end and backing plate, foam gasket on the other side, slide axle in, tighten nuts. Done! Don't do anything else like add silicon or equivalent. Install brake drums, tires, and burn rubber. Don't make it anymore complicated, this is super duper easy.

Exactly the answer I was looking for.! ! When I ask a question, I try to be as thourough as I can --saves a lot of other explaining. BTW --OK to leave the thrust block in and just take out the buttons? ...................MO

If it's a clutch, take out the pin and buttons, cone, I'm not too sure.

I used a thicker gasket with green bearings on the outside, rather than the foam, it was what came from Dr Diff. Good luck, I hope yours are successful. I switched back to tapered.

It is clutch. Usually the pin is broken-missing. If a magnet will pull the buttons, I think I will take them out. Saves losing them next time the differential is removed........MO

Why did you switch back to tapered? Did you have the later style Green bearings? Did the greens make a whining or growling sound? ..............................MO

Green bearings are either loved or hated never seen a wider scale of pro and cons. I installed green and hope they hold up as some say they will fail...

MO, I'm no expert, but I used custom cut steel shims and custom cut gasket paper type on my GTX. No leaks, and no issues....still skids up well and drives with no noticeable noise.
