'65 and earlier take a different type of pinion. whats needed is a 21 tooth and they are well above $100, if you can find one. i went to a ratio reducer for my '65 coronet, pricey but versatile.

Sorry Pittsburgh.( I'm from that area) 70 is different. Thanks for the info guys, I have one that I have to count the teeth on. I haven't pulled the orignal yet, just was wondering if anything "new" was out yet.

sorry 'bout that. i wasnt aware that the 65's and back were different!

Any speedo shop can build you a ratio adapter which is just a little gear box (like a factory GM unit) that screws onto your speedo head and the cable goes to the other side. If you don't have a speedo shop in your area, just google the info.
Here's an ebag example:

I had this done for a ford ranger I had sitting on 35" tires.
Worked great. Cost about $60 at the time. But that was years ago.

My 92 Dodge 1-ton CTD came with ratio adapter from the factory. Had to replace it and was about 80.00 from the dealer a few years back.

Don't fall for the $60-$80 gears. As someone mentioned Ebay is full of the more common gears for $15-$20. I just bought a 43 tooth a few months back and had to pay $35 for it but that is a very uncommon gear. Look for seller patctrans on Ebay.

I think I saw that one. Didn't look like it fit the 66-up trannys. Tip on finding these in the larger number in hit the pick a part yards and look for Dodge powered motor homes. They usualy have the 40-43 teeth ones.

the '65 and earlier speedo pinions were only available in 16,17,18,19,20,21 tooth. they have nothing in common with the '66 and later pinions. this is why mopar used ratio reducers for anything beyond a 3.55 gear. the common reducer is a .80. to use a reducer a different speedo cable is needed. the stock cable will not attach to the reducer.

I found the one that I had and it's a 16 tooth, will start looking for a 21. Thanks again guys !

pat blais has a site on ebay and usually advertises a 21 tooth, about $125. i think his site goes by torqueflite patties. phone number i have is 1-206-365-1966.
