steering gear off center

Just got done installing the borgeson p.s. upgrade on my former manual steering 69 charger, as you can see in the picture there is a angle now between steering shaft and gear box is this acceptable or do I need to do some shimming ?

I suggest you take a close look at both steering boxes, the frame itself & the bolts too. Something isn't right. I did a similar conversion 2 yrs. ago and it all lined up perfectly. My "gut instinct" is that something is interfering with the box bolting up straight. BUT, since you had to remove (or at least slide back) the steering column, IT could have gotten cocked sideways somehow too.... but take a look at how the box bolts up first. "Maybe" there's something in the way or a minor clearance issue of the box vs. the frame?

This is normal. The box doesn’t line up exactly - annoying yes, but function appears totally unaffected, at least on my car.

i think that's were you have to cut the steering shaft and install a universal joint connection. seen that last weekend looking at a car for sale and I didn't feel comfortable with the whole thing.

The shoes rotate on the pins, and slide up & down. As long as there is no binding, you should be okay. Could cause extra wear though, so it might not be a bad idea to add a universal...

I think a universal would be a better idea. Don't know it for fact, but I have a hard time believing the factory coupler was designed to cope with that degree of angle.

I can agree with that. I am sure it will work, but is not a good solution. While the shaft and shoes might work at that angle, the seal surely wont. I am sure it is stretched open. I agree that the universal would be a better solution.

When I installed the Borgeson in my 68 Charger, I had the same exact issue as you. I didn't like that angle either so I added two 1/8" washers under the outer bolt to bring it in line. Here are a couple pics of the result. I thought it was a flaw in the way Borgeson welded that ear on to the steering gear. I brought it to their attention and they suggested the shim. I have not had any issues with it.

I also had to shim my box, amongst many other issues with the install on my particular car. Did anyone have to use the Borgeson pump with the box? Does it make a hissing noise? Mine does

thanks for all the input gentlemen, I took it for a short spin today and all work great. I had done a total front end rebuild last year and installed the quick steer idler and pitman arm and decided to leave them in for this upgrade , my lock to lock is right at two turns and I really did not notice any negative effects, just tight and really a pleasure to now have the P.S. upgrade. I will shim later if I just cannot live with it angled. While I had the column out I installed a new turn signal switch from Daniel Stern, now I have cancelling turn signals and power steering!

I am using ACDelco fluid just cause I had a few new bottles around the shop. I used O'reilly hose part # 13401546

Digging out this old thread:
Is there a consensus how the Borgeson box needs to be shimmed? A friend of mine has the newer model in a Challenger and it lined straight up? Others reported that they needed to shim the engine side mounting bracket (2 bolts) - it seems this was the case with the older model as it pointed toward the engine (when looking from the front of the car to the firewall). The newer model of the box is apparently narrower than the old model and it will bolt up in an angle (as it was the case for the OP). If you shim the outside bracket (1 bolt) you can line up the steering shaft and input shaft in parallel but the shafts would be offset (at least for 68-70 B-bodies).

Or has anyone used a Borgeson box in a B-body and it went in straight? Would you rather get the older model or the newer model (assuming the older model doesn't leak and is properly welded)?

On my 73 it didnt work out with the borgeson coupler, it was to short and to much angle. I needed to do a "McGyver" and welded a round iron to my original coupler and move the column 20mm up.

This is my set up. Not to happy with the way it looks. I've going to shim and see what happens

on my install i find the Borgeson coupler is more forgiving with the slight angle and I use lucas power steering fluid and a derale cooler with no problems, 4 years since install.
