I'm putting together a 440 that came with a cast crank.
I have a steel crank that is fresh from the machine shop.
My question is, can I use the steel crank in place of the factory cast crank?
That would save me money from getting the cast crank turned.

Absolutely, but you have to also use a neutral harmonic balancer and a neutral balanced flywheel/torque converter

I agree. If you don't have any History on that steel crank, have everything balanced!
