The cost of a paint job.

I swiped this off of Corvette Forum. This guy restores and paints C1 Corvettes - top notch stuff. Apparently he branches out on Tri-box Chevys too.

I never learned to become "sufficient" in body repair & paint, in my younger days, as I had a Good Friend nearby that Loved it. He eventually moved away, and made a Business out of it, with his family. They are now One of the Top Level Restoration Shops in the Country, with a waiting list running 4-5 years out. Small crew to control the Quality. Complete builds now range from $250K to $*** Depending on the customer's desires. They've received Many Top Awards for their efforts...

I like how they hid the labels in that pic....lol.

There is a ton of markup in paint and some of the top tier material is the exact same stuff found in the lower-level line at one third the price.

If you shop around, you can save on materials. PPG Deltron/NXT DCU2021 clear. $1000/gallon, or more, with hardener at the paint store or buy it off E-Bay for $350. The product was fresh as well.

When my GTX was painted back in 2001, the paint - colour was around NZ$400 a gallon tin (4 litres) - and that was with a discount.

The topcoats are the cheapest part....it's all the sandpapers, blocks, primer, filler..... everything adds up. I'm just lucky I had a friend do the job with a lot of help from me and a couple others. I couldn't afford to paint that car again that same way.

That was for thier high build, I use Omni epoxy (basically the same as PPG LFDP) which I can get for $250 a gallon with hardener.

Myself and Jim K are hip deep into this truck resto project. And at last count well over $5000 in materials alone
Epoxy primer for base, heavy build primer to Single stage color , and lets not forget consumables, sand paper , tape etc etc etc

I did a Charger about 9 or 10 years ago .
I did all the heavy metal work , then had someone else do final fitting and prep to get it laser straight then paint ( base / clear ) and his bill alone was around $8000 I think. No shop just a private guy that did body and paint on the side

I was raised on European cars and Glasurit in the 80s, when my GTX was worth 2500 tops....... great stuff, user friendly, ect

but our cars all stay inside, almost never see rain, and don't live in direct sunlight........ I see no reason to spend absolute top dollar on paint and primer

I might even argue there is little to no difference between top of the line and middle grade....... I have an akzo nobel store near me, Sikkens/Lesonal/U-Tech/ Wanda

I usually opt for Wanda base coat....... Cleared over with Lesanol or SPI........ SPI epoxy is the only primer I use, it seals, fills, sands, ect

primer/paint/clear for this was about 3K.......red may have added 500-1000 (2023 prices)

sandpaper, buffing materials, grinding wheels, welding gas and supplies, filler, sound deadener, seam sealer, thinner for cleanup, electric was about another 2K

"cost of a paint job?" depends on how much work it takes to get it "ready to paint"

What color is this?

I could have bought the nicest running GTX there is for what I paid in body and paintwork. But, I wrecked it so I was going to fix it. Or, rather, pay someone to fix it! I'm not a paint and body guy although my Harley came out very nice! Sanding bores the hell out of me... I never added up the final cost I paid the shop but I know it's around 130K. And, no black on the hood or tail panel! I think I offered 2 grand to do that but they said it would be much more that that. I had to draw the line. This was to get just a shell of a car back. They did make this cool video of the process, though!
