My wife told me about this the other day in light of the passing of Prince Phillip
Were she grew up, a elevated part of that train line was just down the street
She remembered her mother telling her that they were walking down to those track to try and get a glimpse the queen and prince as they rode their train from Washington DC to Manhattan.
All the neighbours on her street had the same idea
At the end stop in St George (S.I.) they took the Ferry over to lower manhattan for a ticker tape parade ( notice lady liberty in the background of that picture)
Its just another great piece of history in the city and borough of were I live

BTW that line is long abandoned except for a small part near the container port . Its all overgrown, missing sections of track. The trestle's that passed over roadways are still there but all boarded up. A once vibrant part is now urban decay. My wife's parents sold that house back in the early eighties. The neighbourhood was ruined, it was unsafe to walk several blocks to shop on the avenue, once full of great stores. The church down the street were she attended school, received the holy sacraments, where we were married is been closed for some years
But in 1957 when the Queen passed through on her way to the city it was a different world.
