I am running a 160 Thermostat in my HP 440 for the motor breaking period. Before I drive I will install a 180 Thermostat and was wondering if it is worth drilling a 1/16 hole in the outer rim.
I was told this helps with bleeding air out of the system
Any body do this ???

Yes, the hole is important if it doesn't already have an air bleed. My main question is why would you break it in with a thermostat 35 degrees colder than it should be. It needs to fully warm up during this process.
 
x3.....I've never had a problem with air in these old systems but a 1/16" hole never hurt anything either and I've bought new ones that already had the hole.....
 
put in the 180 degree thermostat and drill your hole. Helps burp the system better. Not sure why you would put a different thermostat in than the one you plan on running fulltime...

Not sure was told by my engine builder to do this and change over when I am about to take it out for the summer, Larry's Auto Mach. out of Groton CT. my 440

Hope your engine builder is better at building engines than he is about giving advise about break in. Oil at operating temps works better than when it's not. I'm sure nothing was hurt but breaking in at cooler temps isn't necessary.....and if it has moly rings, they break in really fast and bearings really don't need to be broke in. It is good to get it up to temp and check for leaks etc and I like to change the oil pretty fast to get rid of any impurities. Some builders use way too much sealer and exotic lubes etc on assembly.......

The engine was DYNO and Cam broke at their shop the 440 is in the 69RR and just doing what I was told to do for now and yes they told me to change it to a 180/190 for every day use. Guess you have never heard about their shop and the VERY High Quality
of their work. my 440 was on a waiting list for over 6months and when I pick it up inJan2016 they had 80 more engines to build , I would not let any one else touch my motors
