Tire question 1968

When I went to the 225's, I was able to drop the front end about 3/4" by unscrewing the torsion bar adjusters. This made up for the taller tire. I have a 69 RR conv. that I am running 245/60/15 on front and 255/60/15 on the back. This setup looks good to me on that car, but it has the original rear springs which make the rear sit a little lower than my hardtop.

I went through this as well. The picture in the grass is with 225/70 & the other shot is with 245/60. The rears are 275/60. I ended up using the 225's for two reasons, In order to drop the front end to cover the tops of the tire(the look I like) I had way to much of a rake look. The 225's are closer to the heighth of the rears and look more proportional while filling up the well better. I am using the MP HD rear springs and have about 1" rake. So I have a brand new set of 245/60/15's I will sell cheap if you go that way, lol.

You know, I haven't ordered any new 225/70/15's yet and I re-read your response where you say:

I am using the MP HD rear springs and have about 1" rake

Are these the Super Stock springs?

The stance of your car looks perfect to me with those 225's.

Myself, I have the Hotchkis rear leaf springs which sit 1" lower than stock, so maybe those 225/70's are too tall for me for the look I want. I want the nose to have a slight rake to it like your car shown in the side shot. I put the Hotchkis springs on because I like the design of multi-leaf in front with clamps and almost a mono-leaf look on the rear of the leaf, but looks wise for the stance, I'm not sure if I like it...Right now I have a slight rake with a little over a 2" gap from top of tire to fender lip with my 235/60's and if I put on the 225/70's it will fill the gap up by half an inch, but it will also raise the front a half inch and I'll need to drop the nose down a half inch to compensate, leaving about an inch gap. Am I thinking this through correctly or overthinking??

I guess my main concern is - should my decision between 245/60/15 and 225/60/15 for the front be affected by the fact that my rear leafs make the car sit 1" lower with my 275/60's out back? There is a 0.8" overall diameter difference between the two tires in question...I wish I could try both size tires mounted with the rake the way I want and then make the purchase. I already bought the 235/60's last year and now I want to ditch them. I hope I get it right this time...

do you have a side photo of that other car? I wonder how that car would look with the 275's on back? I think that would duplicate how my car sits since the hotchkis springs make it sit a bit lower.

The rear springs on my hardtop are not the super stock, which from what I hear raise the back quite alot. Mine are the plain hd springs which were used on the hemi & 440 cars. I don't have a decent side view of my conv. on blacktop, but it also has 1" of rake. In my opinion I think it looks best if the rear tire is no more than .75" taller than the front. I did try 275 & 245 together and didn't like the look as there is 1.5" difference between them. My original plan was to use 295/50 with 245/60. Loved the rear look, but they didn't fill the wheelwell up enough for me. Maybe with your lowered rear this would work. Do you have any friends with the different sizes on their cars that would let you bolt them on yours to see if you like?

On my 68 Sat I have 315-35 17's on 8 inch rims (replica alloys), zero offset. Could stand a wider rim but they don't make the any wider in this style. I am pretty sure with a little positive offset, I may be able to get 335's in there. No, they dont rub or hit anything. No air shocks, stock shakles. 235's on the front.

Hunt2elk - man, you are on top of things! Thanks for the quick response. The 1" rake looks perfect on both of your cars. OK, I'm going stick with the 275's in back and swapping out my 235/60's for 225/70's. I will post before and after photos in a few weeks. I will keep my hotchkis rear leafs for now, but may swap them out eventually for either the Mopar HD springs like you've got or the Calvert racing split monoleafs, which allow you to swap the front half of the leaf to get the desired ride height.

I'm almost ready to get the car to paint once I pick a shop in the next few weeks and I want to get the new wheels and tires on order so they can go on after paint is done. Spring is upon us!

Hey Chris I like your 68. How wide of rim are you running on those wheels? Any rubbing issues? Thanks

it is a 15" rim with 4.5" backspacing. so far no rubbing but that was with air shocks jacked up. I just put in new kyb gas shocks and new bb rear springs. I'll let u know if she rubs in a few weeks..

Chris, That size looks interesting. What is your rim width? They don't look as wide as the 295/50 I tried, but the sidewalls on yours look more rounded. I wonder if any other manufactor makes that size.

I agree with a lot of the people here on the P275/60R15 on a 15x8 rim. After taking all my Measurements, I went to TireRack.com to research tire size. If you click on the tire they give you all the dimension so you can compare. This size gave me the largest tire diameter and most width to fill up the wheel well on my 68 Charger. I also am running P245/6015's on the front on a 15x6 rim.

Can you post a photo of your front 245/60/15 on the 15x6 rims? I just mounted my 225/70/15 on 7" rims and while the height is about right to go with the 275/60/15's out back, the side walls look too rounded to me now. I haven't ordered my new wheels yet and I want to make sure I get the correct ones. Thanks.

I have 275/60-15 BFG TA's Drag Radials....with 4.5" offset

Nice car and sweet color! B5 blue?

Yeah, I've got 275/60/15 in the back on 8's with 4.5" backspace as well and I'm good with that. How about your front? I want only a slight rake, but for the top of the tire to be at the lip of the wheel well. I installed 2" drop spindles so I have room to dial the torsion bars back up to get there, but with a 26" tall tire (like my previous 235/60/15's on 7's) the rake is a bit too much for me.

I now have 225/70/15's on 7's, but the tires bulge a little more than I thought they would. I'm wondering if a 6" wheel would solve this?

What size tire and wheel are you running up front and can you post a side view photo?

Hi Guys, Sorry for the thread dig, but I thought it might be best to put my question in a like thread rather then start a new one.

I've come across a set of rims that I like for my 68 Coronet for a good price and I was hoping I could get some advice from some people that have 'been there, done that'

The wheels are 15 x 8, 4.5" back spacing (0 offset) and rears 16 x 8, 4.5" backspacing (0 offset). I was thinking of running some BFG T/A's : front 235/70r15 (28" tall, 9.5" cross section) and rear 285/60r16 (29.5" tall, 11.4" cross section)

Do you guys think these will fit nice? I like the idea of a tall wide tyre in there rear, so I guess I'll have to go tall in there front other wise end up with a heavy rake... Anyone running something similar?

Also I though I should give something back! Here is my car with a test fit of some modern wheels off the car I'm finishing off to sell. They are 18x8.5 - 18x9.5 with 235/35r18 and 265/35r18's with +28 - +26 offsets. They seam to fit well, except that I couldn't seat the rears against the drums, I think because of the rims smaller centre bore sizing. I think if you happy to run large diametre rims, you could stuff alot more tyre out back!

Thanks in advance!

Oh I should say I could go a shorter (27.6" tall) 295/50r16 for the rear, the mate it up to 245/60r15 (26.6" tall) front tyres. Would the short wheels be a better option?

Btw what is the stock tyre size?

Cheers!

I'm sure youve solved this connundrum already, but I think a smaller rim width will make them bulge more. Check this site out, it has a neat calculator. Not sure how accurate, but the numbers make sense to me.
