Hi everyone searched but couldn’t find anything.
On my 65’ coronet the PO fitted a rebuilt 326” and torqueflite trans that was supposedly rebuilt.
I had a fairly major leak from the front half near the pan that I identified as a selector/shift shaft seal. I took the linkage off but the shaft looks nothing like the shafts I am seeing online.
Rummaging around I was able to remove the small rubber cup seal and it started pouring out. The issue is there doesn’t appear to be a larger diameter to the shaft underneath the small grommet/washer for the main cup seal.
Hard to describe but harder to get a picture of!

Below picture of the seal I was able to remove but under this there doesn’t appear to be a seal of any kind- this sits recessed in the case. Not like the second picture?

Was there any model differences that I’ve missed?

65s had cable actuated gear selection and park engagement, so that small shaft is all that should be in that area.

Mike is correct. That is the only seal on 65 and earlier nbits. It is the same seal used on the throttle shaft used in 66 and newer valve bodies located under the E clip. If not removing the valve body get in there with some Scotch brite. Very likely the shaft is rusty. Clean the recess out with a 90 dgree pic.

Thanks guys. And which way up should the new seal go?
Open side up, flat washer, then clip. If this does not fix your leak, the VB will have to be removed to polish the throttle pressure shaft.

Are you sure? The lip on the seal should point down.

Install this side up...

The OP has a 1965 727.

This a metal clad 66 and up case seal. The 65 and earlier uses the smaller seal with no metal that seals the throttle shaft in 66 and later valve bodies.

I understand what year, I was questioning the orientation of the seal itself. Most seals will have the lip towards the fluid or grease. Mike states the open side goes up. I'm not sure what he might be saying.

I just grabbed a random seal to show the solid side versus the lip side.

If you look at theinside of the seal you will see the lip. Mike is correct, groove/open side up.

I built my first TF in 1970 and tons more of them since then. Not to mention T-200s, T-350s (a mainstay), T-375s, T-400s, C-4s, C-6s, Powerglides, and a lot of newer 4 speed automatics. I even did a trans out of a Front End Loader.
That was one big chunk of cast iron. Pretty basic though.
