I couldn't pass up the opportunity to compare these side by side...

The all new Tremec TKX 5 speed next to the famous Mopar A-833 4 speed....

It's nice to have overdrive in a street car.

they need to make it so you can use the Mopar bell housing. From what I see I would have to replace my drive shaft and new bell housing on top of the cost of the Tremac. Might as well; get Jamie Passion Performance with the 855 Passon Performance A-855 Five Speed Transmission

The .64 overdrive gear really transforms the car. The noise and vibrations are greatly reduced and the driver fatigue is as well. Gas mileage does improve but for me, the car just felt easier to live with for freeway driving.

Excellent informative video.

Maybe someday I can get one, I’m using the 833od gears in an iron case, 1-2 isn’t ideal, but the od makes up for it, and of course you can’t beat $500

did you just switched the gears in your stock 833? What do you mean by 1/2 not ideal?

The OD gears from Passon are 18 spline, 2.66 1st, 1.59 2nd, 1.0 3rd, 0.80 4th....
I think the ratios posted above are for the 23 spline OD trans used by Chrysler in the mid-70s for 6 cylinders and small V8s..

Just my $0.02...

what are u running in the rear end?
3.55s. With such a low 1st I can’t go lower, but 60mph is kinda too much for 3rd which is 1:1, and not enough for 4th, which is .73:1

Yes, the passion overdrive gears are way better, but a little expensive for me right now.

So I got the 23 spline od trans, that uses the same size front bearing as the 18 spline, so you have to have a machine shop cut a standard bell housing open, or you try to find the really expensive 18 spline bb bell house. But then you run into the issue of the hardened steel shaft beating up the aluminum case, because Chrysler decided bushings weren’t needed.

So you take a 23 spline 833, take the shaft and gears out, and put the od gears and shaft in. You get a 3.09 1st, 1.90 second, 1:1 3rd, and .73 depending on year and application 4th. And you end up with the poor mans overdrive. Sure 1st gear to second gear isn’t good, but it works, and you get to enjoy overdrive. My 440 was getting 12-13mpg with a 383 avs carb. (I know it was too lean, but it’s what I had and it’s undergoing changes to change that.)

I trying to figure if you can machine 1st and 2nd gear to work with the OD. Or is it that you cant change the gears/wont work with different gears?

I'm wondering how he got a 1.90 second gear. I thought there was a "cluster gear" that had cast in gears that could not be individually changed. Every 833 OD trans that I have seen had a 1.67 second gear ratio.

The ratios are different so the sizes if the gears are different and won’t work. You take the whole shafts and gear assembly’s.

I could be wrong and have a 1.67 2nd. But I was thinking depending on application, 6cyl got 1.90, and v8s could be 1.67. I don’t claim to be an expert, I could have misread something

That mid position sifter looks like it would be perfect for a 71 B with the bench. My neighbor just put one in his camaro and loves it. Still not alot of info on those in a Mopar yet.
