What would cause turn signals to lose power? Brake lights work great but when you turn on turn signal brake light shuts off.

The turn signal switch disconnects the brake lamp from the side that needs to flash. Are both brake lamps out when the turn signal is actuated?
First suspect cause is turn signal switch, but need more information.

That is working as intended.

Bad or disconnected flasher.
Be sure the black wire at the flasher is powered up with the key-on. If not, check radio fuse and at the radio where the black and red wires are connected in one terminal.

Only the side that the turn signal is turned on.

Brakes applied. Left turn signal on. Right side brake light is on and left side brake light is not but is blinking.

If that's what you mean then it's operating correctly. At least that's how it works on my car.

Would a completely removed radio affect turn signals?

On a'71-74, If the dash harness power connector for radio is cut off and and the two wires (red & black) are not spliced back together, you will loose power to the turn signals.
