I looked at Walmart and Autozone, and nothing says Dexron anymore. I was using Dexron III but all the stuff says Mercon. Is that basically the new name for stuff that will work in a 727? Funny thing… I still see Type F.

ATF+4 I think is a good option. But I would wait for better answers or read up on this. I believe Dexron/Mercon is a sort of Universal transmission fluid. Dexron is GM branded Mercon is Ford branded and ATF+4 is Chrysler branded. Type F is another Ford transmission fluid type I think for older cars.

ATF+4 if a fresh build. Dexron/Mercon if you’re topping it off or flushing it. Napa carries it.

I remember Type F as Ford back in the 70’s when I was a kid. Some of the guys that ran Mopar TF’s at Atco ran the Type F and said it offered firmer shifts.

Type F doesn't have any friction modifiers in it. Because of that it will offer a firmer shift than Dex/Merc (or any other ATF for that matter). Type F isn't suitable for anything with an overdrive, one could use it in an TF but Dex/Merc or ATF+4 are better choices.

The thing about Dex/Merc is that there's not any OEM that uses it anymore so there isn't any OEM oversight to the formulation anymore. That said I still run it and it's fine in older stuff. The oil companies have been making it for decades so I doubt they have any motivation to skimp on the formula. I still run Dex/Merc in my '94 Ram 1500 with the 46RH although I leave the OD unplugged in that one.

For any fresh build it doesn't make sense NOT to use ATF+4, it certainly won't hurt any TF either...

Look up the chemical specs for ATF+4 and you will have no doubts about using it.

I have 3 mid 90's trucks with two being on it for a lot of years and one has been on it for about 5 years. They weren't fresh builds either.....

ATF+4

Good quality and affordable at wal-mart.

With the Walmarts around here, you have to go to more than one store if doing a fluid change....or order it. I got to where I'd buy it if I thought that a fluid change would be happening within a year lol. Some WM's didn't stock more than 6 quarts.

If it's like mine for the Mopar Oil filters just climb up and there on plenty stacked on the top of the shelf!!! Had to do that many times..
