What did I do wrong here (HEI Conversion)

I originally had mine on the firewall in place of the ECU, but thought it was a lot cleaner and shorter wire runs to do the distributor mount.
I may go back to my original firewall mount since I have unused holes there.
What quality module would you recommend? I thought they were all made in China.

Try rock auto, even if not made in the US, they do tend to have higher quality proven products.
 
More photos of the 3d mount. Retains factory wiring plug. Bought this for when I replace my hacked up 50+ yr old harness.

And yeah, that coil damage was a big red flag
 
For sure, I would send that coil back and make them replace it.
 
Purchased in November, didn't notice the damage until February. I'm going to call it a learning experience and move on.
 
As far as heat sinks, what I tend to use is when someone is disposing of an old desktop computer with the motherboard and old chip installed, the heat sink on them are robust and designed to protect the chip from extreme heat, good source for a cheap heat sink.

I was just looking at that D1906 on Rock Auto- but Amazon is free ship- I am ordering one.
 
I still have a Napa TP45 in the trunk. If I move it back to the firewall it will at least be easier to change on the side of the road!
I was burning my fingers on the last one- probably a pretty good sign it was getting too hot mounted to the bottom of the distributor.
 
When you run with new coil check how hot it gets, got a heat gun? Wouldn't want it to pop when your near by.

Curious as to why u have the relay in there. Is thar just becuase the rest of your wiring is not factory?

Car is a 1965 Coronet with OEM wiring. I did not want to tax the system and needed a good solid 12 volts for the HEI to work with.

Do the HEI modules draw much more power than the factory ignition module?
