What is a good gasket adhesive and sealent

Thin film of wheel bearing grease to hold the gasket in place during installation. Let the gasket do its job.

I agree with this. Original assemblies generally did not use (or need) sealers.

The adhesive part of the question just addresses assembly issues and a dab of grease will do that job.

For a metal to metal fit (no gasket) I prefer loctite 515. It does what it needs to do and is easy to clean up the next time assembly happens.
What I dislike the most is the old permatex #2. It works just fine as a sealer and adhesive but the next time requires much frustrating work to clean the old stuff up.
