I agree with this. Original assemblies generally did not use (or need) sealers.
The adhesive part of the question just addresses assembly issues and a dab of grease will do that job.
For a metal to metal fit (no gasket) I prefer loctite 515. It does what it needs to do and is easy to clean up the next time assembly happens.
What I dislike the most is the old permatex #2. It works just fine as a sealer and adhesive but the next time requires much frustrating work to clean the old stuff up.
