Which Way does this filter go?

To all,

I have a 1969 charger RT with a 440 magnum and Holley 850 carb. The attached picture of fuel filter was installed on the engine. The single port side was towards the mechanical fuel pump and the main port on the double port side went to the carb. The small port (vapor return line) ran back to the tank.

However, if you look at the Mopar service manual, it shows the Mopar fuel / Vapor Separator which looks a little different than this fuel filter. It is installed the opposite way. The double port side is the inlet and the single port side goes to the carb.

Is my fuel filter installed upside down or is the Mopar separator built different then this fuel filter?

If its that cheap and can not clearly mark inlet and outlet, throw it away.

I would say 2 nipple down,2 nd nipple is for gas return line.

The pictured filter with vapor return, or diverter, line is for AMC, and possibly other, applications. The filter performs a similar function as the referenced Chrysler vapor separator, but operates and fits differently.

The inlet is the single nipple side. The outlet is the larger of the two nipples on the double nipple side. The smaller, 1/4" nipple on the double nipple side is the tank return line connection and faces upward.

The filter should be marked with notations stamped on the end or printed on the side with paint or ink. Ink is commonly used nowadays, and may have worn or washed off.

Although it will function, replacing it with the Chrysler style used in the late 1970s into the 1980s is preferred. The Chrysler style looks like the following image:

The inlet on this filter is stamped on the end:

On the Chrysler filter, the 1/4" nipple on the side of the filter is the tank return line connection and is positioned on the higher side near the outlet nipple. The inlet is on the end further away from the side nipple facing downward. The following image shows a diagram of the filter and the orientation of the side nipple when installed:

Thank you very much for your reply.

Apparently my fuel filter was installed correctly with both outlets facing upwards.

And apparently these new fuel filters ARE a different design than the original fuel/vapor separator shown in the original mopar service manual.
