Once again another question. The starter was mounted on engine by previous owner, but not wired. The wiring harness that goes to this has 3 wires. The one to the battery was a given. The other two wires are red and brown. From what I can tell there's only 2 terminals on the starter to connect to (can barely get my hand to the starter, forget seeing where the wires go). The red wire which goes to the relay and is hooked up to the lower lug in picture. The brown also goes to relay but is connected to middle lug which looks like it may be a ground. What's throwing me off is I would assume the red wire also goes to the other lug on mini starter, but that lug is only like a 3/16 / 1/4" bolt, and the end of the red wire has like a 3/8" end on it.

Does it appear that the wrong end was put on the red wire? That I should change ends to connect red wire to starter. If so then does the brown wire just get grounded to the engine? :edgy: Help!

The large red wire goes to the battery cable connection at the starter and goes to the big post on the starter relay... this brings battery power to your ignition, dash lights etc.

The small brown wire is for your solenoid.

Hope that helps, I just had to figure this out on my car too.

So the red wire goes to the large terminal along with the battery cable and the brown wire goes to the smaller terminal on the starter?

I won't even say how long it took me to get the battery cable on the big lug and tightened down by feel cause between the headers and everything else. WTF makes me want to get slammered thinking that I have to take that apart again  Oh well gives me something to do tomorrow.

Yes, you just explained the wiring correctly. Ha ha yep sorry to say you'll have to get that wire on the starter battery terminal too. Hey at least you'll be practiced this time. I don't know what year or model your car is exactly, but check out this 64 polara wiring diagram that helped me, should be similar for all early B-bodies. You can see the connection to the battery and starter relay on the same terminal. Also your wiring color varies from the chart which seems to happen after 40 years and across models! But rest assured that the center connection on the starter relay is the circuit for the solenoid (small post on starter)

Hitit thanks for the diagram, it's a little clearer than the one i was using. BTW my car is a 64 so this is perfect.

Well lets hope so. I still have some more wiring to be done as well as fuel line to carb, finish a brake line, and misc. other things. But I will be doing a "Happy Dance" when I do get around to starting it.
