anyone use this steering adapter on a 73 Satellite?

Hemi-Itis,

Do you think I could use this in combination with what I have? I just hate the thought of pulling the column back out of the car and having a piece welded on the shaft or something. this would give me a couple more inches it looks like.

you could use that but you should have a u joint in there too.and you know you can tap the lower shaft up in a little if needed I have went as far as 2 inches.and I have also used 1/2inch drive impact u joints.just trying to help.....Artie

Artie, I meant use this adapter from mancini with the flaming river u-joint. I believe I would be good with those two pieces together.

The "lower shaft" coming out of the steering gear?

Thanks

if you have a manual box in a power car(i think so since you said the replacement joint was too short)then combining those two should work just fine.i use the flaming river adapter by itself, since it is cut to length.but you may need to trim the strearing column bottom to use it.

This is actually a factory power car with factory box and coulumn. I really think the problem is that extra distance created by that thick rubber disk. The part I got above was supposed to be for a power steering car to get rid of the coupler and from what I understand most of the columns don't have this big rubber disk.. That adapter from mancinic would still work in my mind as it would move the splines closer to the coulum.

I bet the column in the car is much shorter than a regular power column if I had others to compare it too.

thanks guys, I will eventaully get it sorted out.

i think the flaming river coupler you have is for the cars with the slip coupler not the disc, that is prob why it is too short.just make sure the coupler will hook to the end of your stearing column and you should be ok with the mancini peice.

Sometimes when you cut that dopey rubber out it gets to short, then you need to see your local driveline shop and have them put 2 10-4-13's 1000 series steering weld/end yokes on and a 5-170 1000 series steering joint.
Usually i modify the 1 end yoke and drill it thru to accept a thru bolt as a shear pin, i do it so the bolt is a nice press fit in the end yoke and shaft so you don't have to try and install the entire assembly as 1, though most cars have a slip built into them and you could slide it apart at the bottom of the column.

You could make that combo work, but flaming river does offer the longer version that could make it a one peice conversion:icon_compress:

Hemi...U have a part number for that one? I wonder how long it is? I will do some looking..Thanks again folks.

just found it...heck it is cheaper than this coupler I bought. It looks like it shows the ends being 3/4 and 3/4-36.....my coupler is 5/8 3/4-36 so that could be an issue with this piece.

Looked again, they might have two. Need to call flaming river Monday.

I went to thier site just for the pic. There were several choices for the longer one but I did not do a coparo:angel10:
Did you speak with them before you ordered?????

I actually did and they told me to get exactly what I got. I really think that rubber piece is what screws it up. I just called a buddy and his 74 doesn't have that and he has a couple 71/72 parts cars and they don't have it.

When they added the floating k frame in '73, the coupler with rubber disk was used to absorb the flex. The '73 coupler also had a metal heat shield around it. The '74s were updated because of the heat issue and the coupler was moved near the firewall. The '74 disk is smaller, thinner, all rubber and to find a NOS one today, $25 for a '74..... $150-200 for '73.

Well, I have poly mounts on the k-member and I ordered the replacement disk from bouchellon made out of billet aluminum. They tell me they have had no issues with them being used. The heat shield is long gone as the headers wouldn't come close to fitting with it.. Maybe I need to put a 74 coulum in it.

thanks again guys

You should speak with Flaming river and explain that it needs to be longer and see what they say.My stuff fit well and was an easy install.

I did talk to them and they were helpful and said they had heard that before. The things is that the 73 is so different with the big rubber disk being closer to the box. They said I could use one of the others, but I will rty this for now. I will just ebay the coupler I got or put it on the shelf.

I will report back once I have it sorted out. Thanks again for all the help.

one additional option is to call bouchillon perfomance and order one of their machined t6 biscuit replacements. it's the same dimensions as the stock rubber isolator, but made from solid aluminum so headers won't burn up and it'll last forever.

I'm running it on my 72- with a 73-column, so I don't have the isolated k-frame flex to worry about, and all I had to do was get the steering box properly aligned with the column. the coupler isn't a flex joint, but it did give the factory a little bit of wiggle room during assembly, which won't work with a solid replacement.

great information guys, I needed the help as well

Ralph

I did use the bouchillon piece and I don't notice anything different while driving. Bo more worries of that rubber crap burning up.

Thanks folks.
