Green Envy

I have a 8 3/4 housing from a 1966 Charger, it seems to be narrower (1/2 in) than the 8 1/4 on my Charger. What is the correct way to measure the housing and axles to make sure it all works?

If it cant be used (66 Charger 8/34) It may be a good bartering piece to find one that will fit it.. Just a thought..
 
Glad to know all northern cars have rust and mine is not special. What engine do you plan on installing? I have most of the same rust, Just make sure you treat it all once repaired so it not as likely to happen again. Holy crap that video, DO THE REPAIRS PROPERLY, A proper repair contains NO Bondo, Yes it possible and not really that hard either. Good luck with the car, can't wait to seem more photos

Mesopic, i would like to know how you do body work with No Bondo, Every professional body man i seen has atleast a skim coat of bondo or filler over welds, digs, etc......
 
Fusion welding with oxyacetylene then file finished, Will post "how to do" thread when i repair my front guards (fenders) in a few weeks.

That does sound interesting. But wouldn't type of welding cause panel warp age? I know it is a lost art here,a lot of the old customizers welded that way.
 
My thoughts exactly ours too is a base model so no sence in blowing a ton of cash on repro sheet metal,some of the diehards may disagree [cover ears] but i used whatever sheet metal i could come up with to make all our patches we purchased no sheet metal. So far my duraglass fill in the worst spot is less than an 1/8 of an inch thick just to smooth out the surface as i have said thruout this build this ain't gonna be no show car just a driver for my son to have fun with. OTR you'll get it done it takes time and a resourceful person can make it happen with out goin broke just think things thru and be patent look at mine it's been over a year and i'm only starting final bodywork for primer.

I didn't patch my last project (72 Chevelle), someone did the work and then brazed in the pieces, Which always seem to warp because of the heat, but using body tools, you can hammer them, tap them up and mold them pretty easy, or i thought so, Its very difficult to get away from not using body filler Over replacement panels, maybe a pro can but im far from that, its a lot of work but taking your time, you can get it down to a minimal.. I was lucky and only had 3 places, i do what i have to... I feel as long as im not hiding facts, not much anyone could say when i sold the car.. That and i didn't sell the car for a high price.. I always hope that the couple i did do like this will give enjoyment to someone that may lead them later on to a full done right resto... I wouldn't feel wrong doing it this way to my own car as long as its done right which first thing, get out all the rust there is, spreads like bad news... My car is no show car now but i put my time and money in it, Being resourceful and having lots of patience is the key.. A driver is fun to have, show cars in die-cast form cheaper..
 
Yes You are distorting the metal, however the weld is strong then an mig weld but less distortion is created then the same weld using a mig due to less heat. Also it is much easy to remove/ hide any distortion created as the material from fusion welding is softer.
 
I have a 8 1/4 rear now and a 8 3/4 housing from a 66 Charger alog with axles that I have no idea where they care from,but are suppose to be B body also. So there will be some figuring out.

66 and 72 b body rears arent the same width. 66 b is only 1.75 inches wider than an a rear.Since you will be fabricating a lot anyway why not a tub job with the narrow rear.

dude! for those of us up north that car is mint! ha! no really it is a lot of work but it is doable if he has the time and some welding skills. and in the end if you really like a car not much can stop you from doing it i guess.
 
I agree charger, up north hear its hard to find a decent car and it takes a lot of patience and work to do one. The last car i did up hear (outside of Satellite) was in about the same shape, only all i got was a frame, and part of the body, the frame on it didn't even have a crack in it and the only reason i got it.. Even the wiring was gone and took 5 years and almost a divorce in the process having to buy so many things. luckily around here Chevy engines are pretty easy to find so with ready available parts it wasn't near as hard as a Mopar.. If the unibody is good on this, it would be a patience tester and a lot of work but it can be done. I do think if there is a way to get it sand blasted it would be a good start and help with a lot of things, I never checked on prices to do it and im very aware of the problem with paying to have things done, Im just saying it would be a big plus, but if it cant be done, no way would i just give up, to nice of a car with a real cool body style!
 
I live close to the Indiana/Michigan state line and it is $$ well spent to go south or west for a cleaner car to start with (and thats just in nuts and bolts removal) unless its something special or a family heirloom but thats just my opinion

A friend came over and helped me, my son to take out my K frame. I will have to look for a better K frame.

Cool cliff your on your way now and as I told you hundreds of times yes easier projects abound worse projects around everybody has an opinion even bad ones or ones that don't know any better but the choice to do or not to do got nothing to do with anybody its yours and yours alone if everybody could afford to have somebody do it for us all the time only the mechanics would be rich everyone else would just own them
Your car will be bad *** just like you discribed it to me on the phone then green envey it will truelly be you enjoy the project and remember lastly time not rushed makes it all so much sweater , everything gets better with age so take your time do it your way those of us that care are behind you and beside you in this endeavour and in the health stand point here to help cliff thx jaymie
