Lets talk about Bondo...different products

I've never used Bondo before.

I'll be attempting to fill several small dents in a non-rusted area of a hood, and then I'll be patching some rust holes with new metal, and will probably need a skim coat to even up the patches.

What's the diference between the following products?

"Regular" Bondo

Bondo Professional Gold

Bondo Professional Gold Premium

Would either of them be a better choice for a first time attempt?

I used the gold and didn't like it. To me,it leaves a fine powder when i sanded and it seems it trapped too many air pockets where i had to put another skim coat on. I like the regular bondo and will probably stick with that for myself. Somebody else here might have better luck than i did with the gold.

This is what I use as well. Good stuff.

Never heard of it, but I will look for it.

I saw two nickel sized rust holes and one quarter sized hole (under the lip).

When I started sanding/blasting I found those dents covered by a 1/8 coat about a foot square.
(and found that rust under the fake air inlet trim)

X3 on the Evercoat Rage Gold. I have used the Bondo Gold and have also found it harder sanding and few pinholes. Good luck!

Evercoat or USC, not Bondo..... Also, bodyfill on a hood is funky. Use lead or metal to metal. The vibration will crack the bondo. I like evercoat rage gold, sets up well, sands easy, mixed properly and its basically pinhole free. Summit sells it cheapest.

Evercoat Rage Gold and finish with their Quantum stuff,,, best sanding filler on the market and their metal glaze. If you had air pockets you didnt work it enough when you applied it.

X2 on the Rage Gold and the Bondo gold is crap,its like trying to sand concrete.

The Quantum is like spreading Sour Cream... it is awesome to work with but semi expensive

I had filler all the way across the front edge of my hood on my 68 Coronet.This was done in 1985 sold the car in 2007 and the filler never cracked anywhere.

Also, epoxy prime the bare metal first then apply the filler on top of the primer.

I stray far away from bondo..Like mentioned, pretty hard stuff and workability sucks, doesn't level well and pinholes are more of an issue. I use the Evercoat Rage Extreme, followed up with the Evercoat Glazecoat if need be. 3M also makes some pretty good glaze coats as well. As far as "Bondo" cracking, I honestly think a lot of that has to do with people laying it on 1/2" or more thick on poor repairs. If you're going with more than 1/8" thick of fillers total, you're asking for trouble.

Nowadays, there are other choices to lead, and I wasn't saying no bodyfill on the hood , only main filling should be lead or glass... Hoods flex. Same as quarter joints. I am happy for the guy that had bondo across his hood, that it didn't crack. I know how I was trained, I just figured I d share. Btw, first I would hammer and dolly those dents, why fill. Or zap some studs to pull them. But don't leave them.

It almost looks like hail damage, but why only a small area?

I know if we "tech students " even mentioned "bondo" we got points off our daily grade. Bondo brand body filler is junk. Throw that **** in the trash. I've used " all metal" " evercoat" all good stuff. Mix hardener in good or you will have a bad mix.

That's what I think, somebody went to town with a body pick. You can definately work those lows up some.

Got the evercoat coming from Summit (along with that drop-in 318 cam for .050 more lift [on sale for $88]).

I recently switched over to the 3M Marson Platinum filler at my shop. I can tell you that it is well worth the extra cost over Evercoat Rage. It has a consistency between that of Rage and Evercoat glazing putty. The working time is several minutes longer than that of Rage, it sands easier and pinholes are all but non-existent
