What is the quietest muffler that flows really well? I'm looking for Cadillac quiet.

Depending on your HP level, the Walker line of Ultra flows are pretty quiet especially with an "X" pipe.I went with the Hooker aero chambers, but my HP is slightly more than average for a streeter.

Thanks Hemi-itis. I will check into them. a exhaust system will run me 300 if I supply the mufflers

The Dynomax super turbo is one of the quietest while still out flowing many other mufflers, but it is not OEM quiet.
I din't know of any quiet 3" mufflers, 2.5" has a wider selection of quiet mufflers.
The FAQ on Dynomax says the super turbo is quieter than the Ultra-Flow, but does not mention where the Dynomax VT (has an internal valve) is on the sound scale (I guess because sound will change by RPM?)
I have a set of Walker Quiet-flow SS mufflers (OEM replacement style for an Imperial #22154) that I want to try on my car, but they don't claim to flow as well as the performance mufflers. These are quite a bit longer (25" case, 29" overall) than the Super turbo mufflers (20" case, 25" overall) I have on the car currently, so I need to see what it will take to get them installed.

I don't think Caddy quiet and good flow go together. On my old 71 Ranchero I had Thrush turbos from Summit and they were very close to OEM quiet, and with the floor insulation and tight door seals it was darn near a luxury car going down the road.

Cliff, you need to understand how mufflers work before you make that decision. I know you've seen those honyecomb shaped walls that line the interstate system in some places. Those walls are designed to keep sound within the boundries of the interstate highway and not let it get out. A muffler works much in the same way, however, with a muffler, you don't just have sound to worry about. You have to cancel sound waves, without completely killing flow.

That's difficult. Why? Because with each "wall" or "obstacle" we use to cancel sound waves in a muffler, also becomes a restriction. So, that means the quieter a muffler is, the more restrictive it is. This is why when you take a stock automobile and say, gut the catalytic converter and put on a high flow muffler, you see a pretty big increase in performance. You just removed a lot of restriction.

It helps though, what kind of "wall" or "obstacle" you use to cancel noise in a muffler. Generally, chambered mufflers, like Flowmaster for instance, that use baffles, instead of say fiberglass matting and perforated tubes are the least restrictive. They are even less restrictive than most straight through glass packs. That's because that even though some glass packs are straight through, they still have more restriction than most chambered mufflers.

My advice would be to see exactly how much room you have to work with and put the longest baffled chambered type muffler in that space. Regardless of how many baffles the muffler has, a 28" 3 baffle muffler will still be quieter than a 20" 3 baffle muffler, simply because there is more muffler body for the sound to travel through. In general, muffler body width and height has little effect on the sound volume. The length is what's most important.

Dynomax super turbos. No drone, just sweet.

Just fired up my pretty much stock 383 with Dynomax Super Turbos. Sounds awesome. not too loud. Will find out what they claim about back pressure.

the thrush welded mufflers are a cheap alternative with good flow and a nice rumble for a true dual exhaust all the way to the bumper. 2 1/4 in and out. i love mine , nice quiet rumble with the doors shut. i paid 63 bucks for the pair to my door

I can vouch for that! I have heard Dennis' car and it is pretty quiet. Not like the wife's Nissan, but as quiet as a muscle car should sound. He also has an H-pipe I believe, which contributes to the sound reduction, as well as running 2.5" pipes. The smaller you go the quieter. 2.5" I have heard is good for most street applications. I have 2.5" with straight dual exhaust, no H-pipe or x-pipe, flow masters, and a 360 motor and my car is louder than dennis' big block.

I am still trying to decide between the dynomax super turbos and their ultraflow welded. I am leaning towards the welded. I wouldn't go with their valve flapper design that opens when you get on it. I have heard of the springs sticking after some use.

Great advice guys looks like more research on mt part to find the right mufflers for my Doba since it is a daily driver. Having headers sure isn't going to help in the quiet dept.

The Dyno-Max Ultra-Flows are one of the best flowing mufflers as they are straight thru. The Super Turbo mufflers are not as loud but will not flow as good as the Ultra-Flows. I guess you need to weigh out noise or performance as which is most important to you. Ron

With a stock 318 I guess the turbo muffler would be a right choice for 240HP if the books are right.
