:cat:Trying to get ahead of the curve here. With people cloning road runners and GTXs, soon
there won't be any Satellites left. So I'm thinking of the future, when people will
notice a regular car standing out in a crowd of flashy muscle.

The basic plan here is to take a common GTX and clone it into a Belvedere.
Unfortunately, what I want is a 1968 model, but since I'll be starting with a 1970 GTX
it means I will have to make a few more changes. I'm pretty sure I'll find a buyer for
the Hemi/4-speed combo, which should help to pay for a /6. Not sure, should I go all
the way with three speed manual column shift, or stick to an automatic?

Anyone who's done a similar year change clone, chime in here please. I'm sure I can
weld up the rectangular side marker light holes in the quarters and get some round
lights, but should I cut the 68-69 ridges out of the top, or just bash them in and
smooth over with body filler? Since the plan is to make it a four door anyway, I
already know I have some work ahead of me. The front isn't a problem since it all just
bolts on.

Windows could be trouble, I've seen kits to convert manual windows to power but not the
other way around. If anybody wants to trade, let me know. Same for seats, if anyone is
willing to trade (plus cash from me) a bench seat, I have some nice buckets that I won't
be using any longer.

Also, suspension differences. Can I get any money by selling the torque boxes that I'm
cutting off? I'm trying to lose some extra weight to offset the smaller engine.
Dumping that massive Dana 60 and half the exhaust system is bound to help in that
department. And I'm not sure if I can modify the rad support, it's too big for the 22"
rad that I have for it.

Wish list:
-plain jane interior parts.
-radio delete plate (currently has factory cassette with microphone)
-120mph regular dash and frame. Sorry, rallye dash not for sale, I broke it apart
earlier trying to save some dash light bulbs.
-authentic 1968 four door vin and fender tags.
-9" drum brakes

Any other ideas, let me know. I'm pretty excited about this.

Have a fine, sunny April...

:)

You're gonna needs some narrow 14" steel wheels too so can I have the 15 x 7 Ralleys?

If you cut off the chrome exhaust tips I will trade you for a single exhaust. Of course you will have to kick in some cash for the deal.

you are just kidding right?

I think you should opt for the Convertible HEMI 4speed Roadrunner, not the GTX....GTX's are over-rated :sad5: and maybe if you get the car that was optioned with console shift, electric windows and leather interior. You will also need another identical HEMI GTX optioned up to the max, to cut the roof off, and graft onto the convertible. Just make sure you don't damage those two little headliner retaining springs on the back of the roof line inside. That way when you install window crank deletes, vinyl bench seats, 225 cu in, 3 speed column, poverty wheels with hubcap delete, carpet delete, manual slow ratio steering and 10" drum brakes, you will have the perfect street sleeper...I mean it will literally put people to sleep looking at it. Make sure you paint the car in something exciting like NY Taxi yellow, otherwise you'll be heckled at car shows for having a fake....all the haters will come out of the woodwork.

Carefully cut those side-markers out with a 14" chainsaw.....some guys get rough using a 22" chainsaw....have some finesse about the job....please!! Pop rivets and bondo to install the markers in place is far better than welding, as you want to avoid all that panel warpage and stretching. Paint is best applied with a 4" brush, this avoids unnecessary over-spray and annoyance to the neighbours in the next trailer. I'm sure if Fooose & Co did this, or was it Kanny Wayne Shepherd on that Charger....I can't remember, but it was awesome to watch.

Or if you really are looking to be the talk of the boards here, buy that HEMI Superbird in FLA. I'm sure with a few extra parts - fenders, nose-cone delete, wing delete, hood exchange....you could turn that car into a Belvedere in an afternoon.

Keep us posted with your pics :headbang:

Thanks kiwigtx, I must have been half asleep when I did the original post. It simply hadn't occurred to me to expand my potential donor cars to convertibles or wing cars. What a great idea you have. And thanks for the suggestions for avoiding panel warping. I'm not sure about the 4" brush though, I had been leaning toward a 12" roller to speed things up.

Still gathering up materials here. I managed to find an old OEM vinyl roof still in the box, but it was some goofy paisley design so I spray painted it black. It's all good now.

I'm pleased to hear you painted that OEM Paisley Vinyl roof black...man they only made a handful of them, and it would be a crime to see one actually on a car. It's absolutely horrible to think that someone would use an item like that when there were only a few ever issued.

Now, I have to disagree with your attempts to use a roller....I am not sure that an orange peel effect is called for. The 4" brush affords a certain je ne sais quoi when used in the appropriate manner...and adds a good looking grainy finish. You could also try dipping a bath sponge in a tub of paint and getting better coverage on the bodywork?? However, its your choice on the roller....just don't let it be said I didn't warn you :icon_cool:

This hurts... The car you are making fun of is almost exactly what I have... :(

lol

 No malice was intended in the making of this car *big smiles* Please tell me you are not Kenny Wang Shepherd :icon_bigsmurf:

I do know of a Frankenstein car here in NZ. The owner purports it to be a '70 GTX....even had it featured in one of the first issues of a very popular monthly glossy magazine here. trouble is...it is part "70 Satellite, Roadrunner, and mongrel bits like a '69 dash cluster and column etc....I know this for a fact as I knew a previous owner of parts of the car. Sickens me to see that car running around with the owners blowing off about a super cool blown 440 street beast. The only part of it being a GTX is in the owner's mind.....but belief does not a Muscle-car make.

I've effectively cloned my base Satellite into a Sebring or Sebring plus.
