I just picked up a rebuilt 440 short block for my '68 Charger and trying to make a decision on heads. I have stock rods, 9.5:1 Keith Black pistons and the block has been decked just to clean it up. Stealth heads are 80cc, Max Wedge I think are 72cc. Have a Comp Cams XE268 hydraulic flat. As a semi novice to the engine specs/end result world, is the Max Wedge route crossing over into the "more fun, less reliable" side of things. Thanks everyone. I do plan on upgrading everything down the line as well such as trans, mounts and rear end.

are the kb pistons quench domes or flat tops? quench dome pistons won't fit stealth heads.

you can do whatever you want but the edelbrock is a superior flowing head out of the box.

No way you need a Max Wedge port with that cam. Are you asking about Eddy Victors? The cam is VERY small for a Big Block. The Eddy Performer is a great entry level head. Personally I'd go with another 15 degrees duration at a minimum. What carb, gear and converter?

the stealth heads with that engine. I run stealth heads on my 505 BB approx. 630hp

I am going to go with the new Don Garlits heads..I was considering both the RPM's and the Stealths before these garlits ones were released.

What is this Don Garlits head you speak of?

I decided to go with stealths for my build for a couple of reasons - those victor heads need special rockers which are spendy, the rpms need special headers which are spendy and they all have the same level of machining issues out of the box. Besides, I plan on painting my stealths engine color and calling my 451 stroker a. 383. :)

One thing to also consider, RPMs come with springs and hardware that can handle I think 0.600" lift, while the stealths can only handle like 0.510" lift according to their web sites. Not an issue with the 268 cam, but if you go bigger, plan on a few hundred $$ for the new hardware.

Check this thread mate.

there is info out there on flow numbers for out of the box stealths. rpm heads don't need special headers.

I agree we've used cheap standard headers on the Eddys w/o issue. Eddys are available cheap used. Just saw a pair go for $750. No cracking issues, they're proven.

Last time I checked there is no difference between the Victor head and the Victor Max Wedge other than the intake port opening is CNC'd out to Max Wedge size for about the first inch. Other than that they are exactly the same. Though the intake port volume is larger than the Stealth or RPM head is is almost entirely because the port runner in the Victor is 3/4" longer because of the raised intake port.
