I have a 1970 Charger and the VIN starts XP29.... Looking this up to decode online, that VIN refers to a Charger 500 but my car has no badging/emblems at all for a 500 and I seriously doubt it was ever changed out and standard badging put in it's place.

What am I missing?

check the vin numbers against the core support and rear deck numbers underneath and see if they match.

Core support matches. I can't find the number under the trunk lip.

I just crawled in the trunk and looked up there and all I see is a stamping of what looks like TCP 7 0 1. It is stamped in the center between the speakers. That doesn't look like what I am looking for but see nothing else up there. Where exactly is it and is it supposed to be the same numbers that are on the core support.

Tell us what the VIN #no is on the tag. It will be on the bottom line, far left. Last 7 numbers. Do they match the tag on the dash. Do they match the stamp on the rad support..

Here's a vin location chart, but somehow the trunk was cut off. 1969 and newer B bodies: Have it stamped on the driver's side trunk opening lip under the weather strip.

Thanks. Great diagram. The numbers match on tag, VIN and core support.

Besides the emblems, what was specific just to the 500's that the others would not have?

This will probably help: http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/dealerships/1970DealershipDataBook-03.shtml

Rear deck where speakers could go.

While that is a valid location for some years and some models, on a 70 B body, the VIN is on the trunk rail like in the picture above.

Thanks. Those sales brochures are cool to look through. I have looked up quite a bit online about the 500 and it appears to be a very illusive thing to nail down with a definition. The options that came standard on the 500 also were available as add-ons on the others. So having this or that option does not definitively say if it was a 500 or not. Appears the only visible feature that is definitely only on the 500 and can't be on the the others is the emblems.

Anyone see it differently?

Is it possible they offered the 500 with optional standard Charger emblems on the grill and tail panel? Everything looks original.

Edit: just found this 500 on eBay. Has a standard emblem on the grill. They must have offered both emblems on the 500.

It's not that difficult.

If it has an XP VIN, It was a 500. That was the model/VIN identification for that year.

The 'new for 1970' XH was introduced as the lower cost Charger, the XP was badged a 500 and the XS was still the R/T.

There's no way to know if that headlight door and/or emblem is original or not. I wouldn't go by that.

the left headlight door and the center of the tail panel had the 500 number on them...it's just a trim package, nothing more

I also have a 70 500, VIN starts with XP

There's a VIN # on the door lock?
