i got a 69 satellite. Well today i started my car to let it run, warm up and charge the battery. well after a good ten minutes the car was still idleing like the choke was still on at running temperature. to i pulled the air cleaner and found out that the choke was off and doing what i was supposed to. so then i decide that it was just the idle adjustment was off, so i backed it out and backed it out... and backed it out untill it came all the way out... it should die right??? well no... it continued to idle extremely high like the choke was on. i checked the butterfly valves to make sure there was nothing holding them open and i checked the throttle cable to make sure that it wasnt stuck and it was fine. I dont know what is going on with it but it constantly runs at around 1200 rpms and i can not get it to idle any lower.

Well if your sure the throttle plates are all the way closed then it's getting air elsewhere, start looking for a vacuum leak. I'd start buy pulling one vacuum line at a time plugging them off and hope it's not an intake manifold gasket.

If it's the idle adjustment screws like on an Edelbrock then you turn them in to restrict fuel at idle.

Don't forget to check the brake booster if it has one.

Yes, all carbs I've ever seen are seated (no fuel) when screwed all the way in.

i wasnt messing with the idle mixture screws. i was just messing with the throttle adjuster backing it out trying to get it to close the butterflys and slow down. and shouldnt that cut all the fuel to the motor too 747mopar?

the butterfly valves just wont close any further but they are not blocked.

Backing out the idle speed adjustment entirely (fully closing the butterflies) should restrict air flow to the point where motor will stall or at least idle very slowly

Sound to me like you have a vacuum leak i.e air getting in to manifold by means other than carb... Brake booster is most likely...

If you don't find a hose or vacuum leak, next is take carb off and look at off idle circuit and see if the slots are closing by looking under neath. You could have a bent shaft or plates are getting stuck with carbon. Any recent back fires from carb can bend butterflies..

Your fast idle cam is hung up on the fast idle screw or the pivot it rides on.

The fast idle cam isn't sticking? If it was, the normal idle speed screw wouldn't have any effect.

You said you checked the throttle cable for movement, but did you check for proper adjustment?

Is the carb clean, inside and out? That's a must!

Could be pulling air from a leak somewhere, but suggest you pull the carb, and check the throttle plates (lower) to be certain they are actually closing all the way. I've seen them before, either bent, or not lined up right, that would not let them close.
If they do close all the way, make sure there's no binding...should freely move. If anything looks flaky about the base gasket, replace it. Also be sure once gasket/carb are mounted up, throttle plates still move free. They need to be able to close all the way, before you have a chance to set the idle, that should be bearly cracked.
