A couple of thoughts...
This shows why the SPD is NOT the build date but only a SCHEDULED date. The engine was assembled a day after the SPD. Figure it took a week to get the engine to the plant. It's likely the car was assembled around January 30th.
VIN stamping on engines and transmission housings is an interesting topic and this is a good example. Research continues.
The 237 axle assembly code on the Broadcast sheet tells us the rear came with a 1 3/8 pinion so it was a 741 case.
While more common to '69 and later, the 489 case was released late in the '68 model year. Check the casting date on the housing.
