This black Charger is a hot box! What can I do?

(1) Repaint the car in a lighter color. How about EW1 Spinnaker White?
(2) Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) for your headers and exhaust.
(3) Insulate your floor boards.
(4) Sell the car to one of the guys above. Lol
 
Oh god! Flash back from when I was kid and my sister would roll the white tight in the '71 Satellite while parked directly sun. Those leather and metal buckles would burn!

The issue is when driving. Thinking about line the firewall and floor with this:

All kidding aside, you have to figure out why you are building up excessive heat. What is the operating temperature at 70 mph? I can understand HOT in traffic, but not at highway speeds.

1) Name isn't Twinkle Toes White. It's TripleBlack. Nothing but black for me, and one big red '02 Ram 2500.

70+ mph, how many plus? That's confidential.

The heat is coming from the headers. I've seen them as high as 750 degrees. Second reason is there's only 1/2 of jute padding attached to the bottom of the carpet.

750 degrees, are you sure? That seems really high. My 440 never gets over 450 at the header in North Carolina heat.

2&3) I am not that far along on my Charger. I'll have to do something as I live near Savannah and I don't have a/c. I'll let you experiment on your car and report back to us.:D

My black Charger look, runs, and drive great, but it's a dangum hot box in this Georgia summer heat! For example, the air temp was 85 degree on the drive home. I was soaked head to toes in sweat when I got like I ran 500 miles in a race car. The drive was only 30 miles at 70+ mph with both windows opened.

I have decided my winter project will be to recover the seats (no more worst seats in the nicest car rewards for me!) and prepping the heater box for heat and AC. I plan to pull the dash and carpet to make it easier. I figure since I'm there, I'll address the excessive amount of heat coming through the floors and firewall.

I think one the biggest things I can do to help is to control the main source of heat: the headers. I looking at replacing the header with coated one ($600) whit is said to drop temps by 200 degrees or wrapping my existing one ($100) which drops temps by 300 degrees. I'm leaning toward wrapping because of cost and I think wrapped headers, when done right right, looks freaking cool. New headers would look better and won't rust like wrapped headers.

Next step would be some sort of heat barrier/insulation behind the dash and on the floor. I know there are literally thousands of different insulation products out there to do the job, but what works well to block heat from the firewall and floors? I'm not concerned about noise as much as i want to block heat.

Another thing I plan to do next is tinting the windows 20% with a good thermo blocker.

Any suggestion or other things would be awesome to hear. Thanks!


I just finished covering the car in Peel N Seal. Noticeable difference. Less vibration too. Way cheaper than dyna mat

It will jump to 550 degrees in a few second then average out around 650. Running it hard will push it to 750. Maybe I have the spark advance incorrectly set? It pops on WOT and farts when slowing down from 4k rpm. The headers are Headman goes-up-in-smoke-at-first-startup painted steel.

Isn't that roofing tar with metal foil backing? I saw that in Home Depot today. I was thinking about getting it but I figure the tar would turn to goo with the heat I'm dealing with. I failed to mention I have a thick layer of schutz undercoating where the floor meets the firewall all the way the rear seat base. Those areas aren't nearly as hot, but they also aren't close to 750 degree headers.

I can relate to the OP's lament. The GTX gets roast 'em hot while driving in summer.
Uncoated headers and full 3" dual exhaust will do that sort of thing, regardless of the nice padded factory-style carpets.
It's bad enough that my wife hesitates to go for rides in the car.
Thinking seriously of going to factory exhaust manifolds and pipe sizing to combat it, honestly.
