Add the quotation together as written, then add it to the answer above it.

In "addition"- to this-- if this path is followed and the- presumed -missing lines (4+7, 5+8, 6+9, and 7+10) are inserted above the 8+11 line. The resulting solution will be 96.
So this one method will yield both 40 and 96.
The "math" is not wrong. (don't panic Kern) ---It is the assumptions made that can cause conflicting results.

I always did well when it came to -test taking- because I put myself in the seat of the test maker and included my imagined intent of their question as being a key to the answer.
For example--a test for intelligence is crafted to identify free thinking.
Other kinds of tests like MMPI are crafted to find mental instability.
I have taken the MMPI (for work purposes) a few times and my dry sense of humor singled me out for closer (one on one) examination/interrogation each time eek.

When I came back from Iraq and we all went through the whole assessment phase to identify anyone with issues that needed to be met the lady who interviewed me about lost it when I had a full fledged, in living color, flashback right in front of her. She got me to talking about my experiences there and that was that. Away we go on the magic carpet ride. Yeah, they hustled me off to the rubber room right away.

If you add the missing lines between 3+6=21 and 8+11 you will see the path to 96.
This is the reason that two answers can be correct.
The given information and the intended information have collided in this instance with two good answers. Which is why I posted this one in the first place.
It -IMO- is a bit unique in that respect.
