So, this happened - seeking advice from painters, please!

For whatever it is worth.. My paint mixer said it is near impossible to match older paint, even if you know the factory paint code.. He say's because the materials they used then. is no longer available.. For example, years back there was lead in the paint, and lead affects the color.................MO

The other problem, especially with red, is the colour has changed due to sun fading it. My wife's 67 Land Rover is red, mostly, and under the bonnet it is still red, the tops of the wings it is pink. Of course, the tropical sun here has an accelerated effect.

Update 6/9/19:
Hagerty wound up sending me a check directly.
I went over the estimate report with their preferred body shop over in the next town (about 45 minutes away) over the phone and he said it sounded "workable".
Hagerty has been on the phone with me a couple times,assuring me that if additional funds are necessary they'd work it out with the repair shop.
They also reminded me not to fork over the loot until I was tee-totally happy with the work.

The guy there insisted I bring him the car in person, which I did this last week, dodging all this crazy-azzed weather we've been having (biblical proportion rains continue daily).
Looks like the PDR method is a no go - the dent has a "deformed edge" and will need some working on.
I'd attach the actual estimate if there was a way to do so here...
Suffice to say, they've authorized re-working the finish of both quarter panels and the roof
as well - not a total re-paint, but a "tinted" adjustment to re-clearing those to blend or some
such.
Body guy says that'll work.

While there, I decided to work out some side work for cash while he had the GTX.
That funky screwed up roof leaded seam on the drivers' side will be addressed, along with a little bit of bubbling directly under each door at their rears in the rockers that looks like the
beginning of rust issues.
All of that additional will be $400 out of pocket. I'll gladly fork that over for the peace of
mind of doing what I can to keep her rust-free. Not looking for show car here (she ain't
and never will be), just structurally sound so I don't have to worry in the future.

She goes in tomorrow and he assures me this will go quickly, as they don't play around
with Hagerty insurance work ("we know who butters our bread").
He also understands this one is special - to me. Assures me she'll "get love" while she's
there.

We'll see....

UPDATE:
The body shop contacted Hagerty for some "supplemental" money on the claim, which Hagerty immediately
approved. Another check headed my way, apparently...
Spoke with the body shop and they're optimistic it will be done by end of week.
Of course, they said that last week as well, but that's fine. As long as she's good when they're done, I'll
sing their praises to the heavens and fork over the loot gladly.

I'm doing my best to leave them be while they do their thing - I know nobody likes a
pesky customer when they're trying to do their jobs.

What I saw shocked me...
They had not only taken care of the dent I caused + the bubbling areas under both doors, they also had stripped
both roof seams where it meets the quarter panels!
I was like "uhhhhh, guys? I didn't say anything about that, nor can I afford more work than we discussed"
The manager wouldn't hear it, said we were still good on the numbers we had agreed on earlier.

He observed that the car is getting "the love it deserves" and that it wouldn't leave his shop until it was "right" -
then acknowledged that his companies' name would be on the work.
He also said he knew I was "quite active online".
He knows the deal - if I get good service from someone, I sing their praises from the heavens.
If I don't - well, I know a certain well-known transmission rebuilder who found out about that, too.

Latest (admittedly probably BS) promise date is next Tuesday.
Now he's talking about re-painting the trunk lid too, where the PO did a "burn through" with their amateur
paint job because it's bugging him.
Oy, man. At the least, I'm going to insist on displaying a little placard or something for his shop at the next
show I take her to...
I tell you what, if anything else, she will be substantially more structurally sound body-wise.

Glad for you Ed.. I am having the opposite problem. I finally fired my paint guy. He did very well on my 64 Dodge , and started out well on the 68 Satty. Then fizzeled out the last few months. After over charging me and I paid him immediatly when he wanted to collect money. I think he is heading down the bankruptcy path. Every day I am finding more things he did not do well or not at all. Today I found that he did not install side window parts that I furnished..expensive, and must not have wanted to put them in when the doors were off the car.. He installed the new roof rail seals and got them switched sides. Hope the are not mashed and ruined. Other painters are booked up till next year... Better stop here, steam is coming from my ears............................MO

Dang, Mo, I'm very sorry to hear of your troubles. :-(
I often lament that I should have learned the trade early in life, because there sure seems to be a lot of horror stories involving body & paint - everybody seems to have stories to tell about bad experiences.
To be honest, I'm not allowing myself to get too excited yet this time, either - until I see the car finished and looking right AND the final bill being what we actually agreed on, anyways.
After all, what I have so far is a car in various stages of disassembly with unfinished areas and a lot of buzzing about going on, along with a fella that talks a mean game.
I hate being at someone else's mercy - it's not a position I find myself in very often.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, but you may end up with a car in much better shape because of the accident, so maybe something good can come from all this. From what you describe, the shop seems to be a decent place. Keep the faith!!!

Just an odd thought that might well be a brain fart..... ask them or make sure they account for shrinkage of the paint in the area they’re painting. Especially if it’s not the whole quarter. That could make for a problem you don’t want to have down the road a bit...

From the sound of it, the whole back end of the car is going to wind up getting shot I think....

Pecan ridge did some work on my Bee about seven
Years ago and the paint match was perfect. Told me it took them a while to get it mixed right but it’s great can’t even tell it.

UPDATE 6/28/19:
She's baaaaaaack!

Wound up, she needed a little more attention than just the self-inflicted dent!

On both rockers under the rear of the door openings, rust had stirred up and holes were present, covered only by the previous owners' quick fiberglass patches.
That got cleaned out of there and new metal patches installed.
The roof "lead" seam on drivers' side was a mess and they wound up melting out all the original lead on BOTH sides, then fabricating metal to repair those areas as well.

Finally, although Hagerty had only approved a "blending of the roof and both quarters", the body shop wound up basically repainting the entire car from behind the doors as well as the roof!

Color matching proved exact - even though I had the original Sherwin-Williams codes for the car and she'd never been outside garages much, the shop usually don't use that brand.
Well - I suspect they tried to color match with their own stuff, then found someone local who DID have S-W and blended up exact match once their attempt failed. The car wound up getting the exact same S-W paint as original.
No matter - the net result is, she looks a TON better. Very happy! ​

She's home safe and sound, after me getting heat prostration and having to outrun a couple of wicked thunderstorms.
Thank God...
