some are actual words or parts of words

mostly it's to develop a cadence

I wish Mecum and BJ would turn down that crap in the mix so I could hear the commentary guys go on about how a gm car is never able to be documented for the correct engine without the window sticker.

I have been to many auction and you have to be careful because of the speed involved they can lose you and sometimes they try. I was bidding once and the bidding slowed down and I noticed twice he pointed to someone and the bid went up. After the second time I stood up, stopped the auction and asked who he was pointing at in the corner. He said over there and I said where. There was no one there and the game was over. I bought it at my last bid and later he and I had a conversation.

i once bid against Myself because i couldnt understand half of what the auctioneer was bellowing.
i had top bid but,he was just a going all waving and shouting so..i bid some more
truth,got laughed at and laughed along with everyone else.
did end up with the car tho.

I explained to him if he ever tried it again, it would be his last. Their reputation is everything to them. I took him to the side for this conversation. I wasn't there to embarrass him, just make a point.

The invisible man makes it to a lot of auctions.

If they are good at it, you won't even know. I always stand in the rear so I can see who I bidding against. When an auctioneer sees that lust in our eyes, they are tempted.
Besides discouraging bids from being plucked out of thin air, when they sell choices off a table, I can play What's My Line and guess what it is the competition wants, then bid accordingly.

They are pretty honest that way because someone like myself will see you try to bid against yourself and take note if they take advantage. (the thing to do is make eye contact and point at your chest, mouthing something like: Me?)
I'm called a "dollar guy", meaning I will make them back up to a dollar if no one else wants the item. That, and I buy whole rows of stuff for a dollar or two to take home and dig through.
A buddy of mine, also a dollar guy (who owns 40,000 deeded acres) accidentally bid against each other without knowing. Later the auctioneer said that was the most fun he had all day. We all laughed, and why not, it was still cheap with two dollar guys going at it.

Our shop has a used dealer lic. We go to the adesa auction at least twice per month for late model stuff for our small lot.
Few years back they{ adesa } went from live bidders to letting online bidders play along also.
They have a gal at each of the 5 lines on a laptop with a big screen TV showing whats going on at that second.
If it was not bad enough having to watch your *** with in person bidding plus the phantom bidder and the ring guy pulling bids out of his rear.
Now these past few years we got the online bidders at the same time. LMAO
wait till the end, pay attention.
get a number in your head and do not cross it.

When I was a kid my dad and I went to a lot of cattle auctions to buy and sell beef. Couldn't really understand most of it. I know in cowboy lingo you're supposed to say, "Hep!" to bid. I've mentioned it before but that's how a learned to drive a stick shift. Dad unloaded the cattle into the chutes from the truck and I'm sitting in the passenger's side waiting. A cowboy comes up and says tells me to move the truck because he has other trucks to unload. I was about 10 years old. I told him I didn't know how to drive a standard shift and he gets in my face and said, "MOVE THIS TRUCK!!" so I did.

I don't know how it's done now but back then everyone had cattle whips.

it's supposed to be confusing, high paced

you need to stay on top of it if you go & actually bid

I think the Mecum & BJ auction are pretty well run

not much funny business goes on there
nationally televised it'd kill their businesses, if it wasn't

it does get annoying too
(especially when the auctioneer tries to make it about him/her)

sometimes you need to cope with it if you are buying or selling

I do think some of the phone bidders (especially @ Mecum)
are shills sometimes, driving the bids up
but I don't/wouldn't know for a fact, just me being suspect

1/2 of the Mecum auction doesn't even sell
& 1/2 of them goes to bid goes on desk,
& then they rape you 'there instead'...
In plain English...

it's a place for buyers & consigners to meet,
with a captive audience, there to buy & sell

they have their place, for damn sure

I've been to probably 30 auctions of the years
BJ is by far the best ran, that I've ever attended
(only 1 time I thought they quick gaveled a 70 'cuda, Hemi car IIRC
it was made into a huge deal too)
it's a huge *** car show, one of the best you'll ever attend
with memorabilia & rare cars,
that actually are for sale, actually move & drive
great food
great looking babes too
wed. or thurs. have great deals on good projects
if you're smart don't partake in the 'adult beverages'
while or if you're bidding or gonna' bid

it does help dull the senses thou

Sat. is the higher priced stuff, need your head on a swivel
best to bring someone the watch the crowd (keep an eye out)
& see whose bidding against you if any too
