Red and yellow dot on tires...

I have been telling the tire guy this for years.

I'm certain that the tire shop near me will just say 'it doesn't matter'

I find that alot of people say that stupid phrase when they are clueless haha! Hey if ya don't know why it's there, just say "eh it doesn't matter". Then they find out sometimes it does matter the hard way. One place you never really here that is from a good engine builder. They always take the time and know the reason for most everything and it's cool to watch. I sat in my local Pro Mod engine builders shop and talked to him for awhile before I built my stroker and he had a reason for everything he did and how it was assembled. Pretty cool.

Just reduces the amount of weight needed to balance.

..and every now and then- "spin the wheel" and you might get a balance without weights!

(see what I did there? ...a spin balancer joke)

I got some of the 'it doesn't matter' at work and that was a machine shop in a refinery! Told one guy that it'll matter when it fails and causes a fire and kills someone and then walked away from him. Another phrase that I can't stand is "it'll come out in the wash....."

Learn something new every day! Not really understanding the meaning of low point dimple on a steel wheel tho. Are they taking about the seam line??

Hmmm, I've heard from multiple sources that the red dot is the heavy spot, and goes opposite the valve steam.

Will be nice to see someone with a balancing machine making a comparison, doing red dot align with the valve and at opposite the valve steam.

I did that on the last two sets of tires I installed . None of the 8 tires took more than 1 oz of weight.
I have a used set of Americans with BFG T/A tires one has about 12 oz of weight on it. I plan on breaking it down re-locating the tire and see what I end up with. The tires are old and have no dots. We will see.

A long time ago in a Galaxy far far away, I used to zero balance our wheels bare
and then mount the tires. Check balance, and if it was O.K., we were good to go.
only usually needed a trim. if it was out more than two oz., the tire went back.
NFG. Next!

Or spinning a wheel with no tire to see how much imbalance is in the wheel versus the tire.

Yellow Dot tires are from the Far East and the Red Dot tires are from the Middle East. They are birth marks.

You guy's want a nice riding vehicle? Find a competent shop with a Hunter Road Force balancer and a guy who knows how to use it.

The explanation I heard is that the red dot marks the seam, which is typically the heavy spot.

That logic makes finding the heavy spot seem relatively easy versus finding a light spot.

I do own a balancer and tire changer, so I guess the next new tires I get I will do some experimentation.
