Magnesium anode to stop the rust

Thinking about using some old boat tec for freshwater. Bolting it to the frame and let the rain begin.

I think you might have some success if you put the anode on or very near areas you want to protect, but no way a chunk of Mg up front would protect the rear from corrosion. The reason it works better on boats is they are all in the same electrolytic bath (seawater).

Most of these types of rust protection schemes have been proven to be snake oil, you might have some small benefit but I wouldn’t count on much.

Zinc is correct.
And they are used on fresh water boats, also.

I'm a long time boat owner. Funknut is correct. It's a sacrificial anode, but only works in water hence the term galvanic protection. Really good/clean ground on the body will help.

Thanks for that post lots of info I will call an anode company and find out details for use on a car and if it works. Worst case it will just help with some corrosion but im sure my 50 year old mopar will like any help it can get lol.

Read the link zinc are best for salt water magnesium is best for fresh I will be calling a manufacturer to see what would help best if any. The reason I thought of this is if you check into home water heaters the difference from a 6 year warranty to a 12 is nothing but they put a pencil anode in one of the tank plugs. Lets hope it works.

the boats need it because of the disimilar metals, stainless and aluminium. I don't think the anode will do much for a car unless it has an aluminium body!

Yep, different metals and voltage leakage that creates the plating process. The Zinc is the sacrificial. Why I said as long as he doesn't back too far down the ramp he should be good... without it!

Unless you put it in the radiator filler neck an anode on the frame ain't gonna do squat.
