Best place to mount speakers?

Looking to replace my dash speaker, add two new speakers, and convert to a discrete antenna. I don't want to mount speakers on the trunk divider. What is the next best place to put them? Also, is there something I can buy to do a proper antenna delete and fill in the gap on the fender?

An example of someone's speaker setup in their own Charger would be nice.

On my 69 charger, the 3.5" dash speakers that came with the am 8 track option (not the center dash speaker) sound fantastic! And I mounted 6x9's underneith the package tray sheetmetal as to not cut or modify the factory speaker openings.

For the antenna the easiest approach would be installing a retractable one, there's also ones that mount to the inside of the windshield if your planning on filling the hole in the fender. As far as speakers go that's 100% on the owner because nobody but you knows what your willing to cut, modify or add.

In my case it was an extremely easy decision, adding Chrysler 300 rear seats (high backs with headrests) meant I needed to build a package tray that blended into the seats creating the perfect spot for speakers. For my smaller speakers the center console was chosen, it's also custom made so zero harm to any rare part.

Honestly I'd add 2 quality 6×9's in the package tray, you could easily mount them on the bottom side out of sight as well. Up front they didn't give you much, your either forced into buying an oddball speaker to fit the factory dash location or cutting holes in something. Lower doors and center console are the best areas as far as getting them in a safe and ideal location but nobody wants to cut up that stuff. Making some custom kick panels would be a way of avoiding any surgery to OE parts? If your wanting a stealthy install I'd get that goofy sized speaker, you can get those in a nice quality speaker with dual voice coils (single speaker plays left and right).

More info on what your goal/direction for the car is would be helpful.

I definitely want to avoid modifying anything that isn't the trunk divider... Kick panels would be ideal. I'd rather mount them externally in a not-so-aesthetically pleasing way than modify anything heavily.

As for the antenna... do I have to pull the fender to replace / remove the antenna? I sure hope not.

I'm also using a retractable antenna.
But a speaker in the kick panel on the drivers side is almost impossible, due to the e-brake pedal residing right up against it.

Can't speak for the antenna part because I still have mine. I did however do a complete stereo on my 69 charger.. I didn't want to damage the kick panels or the doors. I had holes in the rear deck already so that wasn't a big deal.. But the thing I did upfront took some speakers and their measurements and some particle board with resin and built two little speaker mounts that sit right under the front seat pointed straight up. They are small enough to stay out of the way and yet have two smaller speakers in them and sound great. The sound comes straight up and are not bouncing all over the place. It took a little time to make but well worth it. You may not want to go to that extreme but in case. I'm trying to get some pics out of my phone. I'll add when they decide to send.. probably from home later today

There is no package tray in a 66/67 Charger it's a plywood divider plate hinged to drop down into the trunk which makes the large opening.
I built a dual cone subwoofer box (but you could buy one) and I have a pair of small enclosed speakers. I used to have pyles mounted with brackets to the side panels where the carpeting is but now I just have them loose. Hopefully I never get hit by one.
I'm not saying it's the best setup but it's how I avoided cutting any holes in the original stuff.

Mines a 69 so??? I would think yours would be similar. You should be able to unscrew a nut on the mass and pull it out the bottom?

On your speakers since we now know you want discre

I remember looking at them but couldn't remember exactly how they were laid out.

I see those rear panels -- does your car have a Citron Gold interior? If so, did you paint those rear panels?

Pearl white, just a crappy picture sorry.
They are original, I've done the carpet twice now.

A member on FxBO posted quite a while ago, a speaker mounted to the kick panel area under the plastic panel.

For the grill, he used a shower drain cover as a guide to drill a couple dozen holes!

Brilliant.

Very unobtrusive visually, and clears the parking brake pedal travel.
You just need a second set of expendable kick panel covers.

The trick is to figure out how deep of a speaker you can use, and how to mount it securely and rattle free.

For the rears, I'd consider pre-made boxes placed in front of the divider.

You could mount brackets or try velcro to keep them from sliding around, yet be movable in the even you need to haul skis, surf boards, etc.

If you decide to got the retractable antenna route you will at minimum have to pull the door off. The gap with the door on is not large enough to fit the antenna motor in. I barley had enough room to get in there to install the dummy antenna I mounted. I overlooked the antenna hole when I sent car to paint or I would have welded in a patch and had the painter do the body work to make it disappear. My head unit is hidden and controlled via my phone so I use this antenna which routes to my custom seat delete storage boxes in the back seat area.

I also do not want to cut up my car. When I get to that point, I will enhance the existing speakers and build a speaker box to set in the back with an extra 67 grill as a speaker grill. Plus, maybe modifying a set of headlight buckets with speakers to set on the sides in the back too.

Following along, as I am in the same boat with my 66. I considered hanging small speakers below the dash, but I have factory A/C which takes up some of that space. I may look into the two speaker setup in place of my original dash speaker which is blown. I noticed that the rear seat bottoms overhang a fair amount and considered mounting small box speakers under there?

Could you remove the bottom (dog leg) fender bolts and swing the bottom out to gain working room without having to mess with and re-align the door (or fender).

If you take the splash shield off there is a good amount of room.

Of course, you could do like I do --- just take along a portable Blue Tooth speaker or two and play Pandora on your favorite station.
