The 402 pan would be the original pan used. I think the 187 pan is an A body pan iirc. I would upgrade to the 6 qt “hemi” pan. Pickup tube and pan are available as a packaged deal for a pretty reasonable price.

Got one off E bay 5 quart pan for around 60 buck's with shipping and all. Fit 440 and 383. Used same pic up tube. It was about an inch from the bottom. Figured it would not be sitting in the sludge and getting plenty of fresh oil. Oh it was non painted. Company out of CA.

The 187 pan is a C body pan also used for A body BB conversion. That pan will probably rub on the center link in your 70 B.
The 402 is the BB B-body 5 qt. pan. 5 qt. with the filter.
I would get a 6 qt. pan like the one Kern Dog has. There are few to choose from.

originality doesn't matter much but fitment and drivability does, just wondering if deep sump would be to low otherwise I'll use the 402 ,my car is altered in many ways. Just never had a 70 re and was looking for experience, thanks for your help

Look at the link I provided. As I said, the 6 quart pan at the top is the one I use - and it hangs exactly the same
as the stock 5 quart does, no lower at all. Clears everything under there just fine also.

yes I already have and that is why I gave you a like and thanks but I have 3 oil pans already and want to choose from existing stock thanks

After talking to my motor man the pan I got the pick up tube is about half inch off the bottom. You have to think extra oil in the pan will allow the pick up tube to be in the oil. I would rather my tube not be right on the bottom and have a little leeway so not to pick up the sludge on the bottom of the pan. Just my two cent's. The motor man say's if he thought I needed a longer tub he would have suggested we get another one before picking up the motor.

I follow ya. In the street car and not being a WOT for 11 sec you'll probably be fine.

The 402 will work fine. There's no need for more oil unless you're doing some serious beating on your ****. Some have baffles and with a windage tray it'll be good. I ran a 77 c body pan on my 440, 3.91 gears, at 6000 rpm for 3 miles straight with a high volume pump when I was younger and dumber. No oiling issues.

I believe if you go to the Milodon web site, they say 5/16" to 3/8" off of the floor of the pan.

For their stuff yes but not for factory. Look at both pick ups and u will see what I mean. Kim

the way the factory pickup is made with it contacting the bottom of the pan the intake on it is around 1/4 to 3/8 from the bottom of the pan.

One key point from my own experience - "hemi" pans & pickups are not all the same. Make SURE to get the pan & pickup from the same company
