A person observation, I have seen many car magazine articles touting electric fans and aluminum shrouds. They all swear by them and in cooler climates, where all the articles take place, they seem to work.
I've used 3 different electric fan n shroud setups. 1 was from a Ford Contour, kept engine nice at slow, under 45mph, speeds and idling. But over 45, it would hit 220° n climbing. #2 was a custom made aluminum w flaps all over it for more airflow at higher speeds w dual 13" fans. Again, great at under 45mph and idling but 220° n rising over 45mph. 3rd was a vacuum molded plastic shroud w twin 12" high amp fans. The plastic shroud was curved on the inside. Same exact scenario as 1st two. Company said to add 3/8" slots at bottom for more airflow, then cut holes in each corner and add flaps for more airflow. Still same result.
I only have 3" between radiator core and water pump shaft face. Serpentine pulley so reverse rotation pump and fan. No room for fan clutch. I am using factory shroud w a 19" nylon 11 blade reverse rotation fan from Chevy 496" truck directly mounted to w/p pulley. Works amazing. Slow, fast, idling. Engine on interstate stays around 176°, slower cruising around 186-192° a/c vent temps around 38°. This is w a 496 stroker in AZ w 115-125° ambient temps.
Does anyone have any good experiences w an electric fan/shroud combo in Hot environment. Over 110°.
