Carter 2brl on my 318 Poly

I'm having a hard time getting my Poly running correctly. It coughs upon acceleration. I know there are many things that can cause this, but my question is regarding the accelerator pump on the Carter. What position is the plunger supposed to be in when the throttle is completely forward at idle? How much of a stroke on the plunger should there be? Any Carter BBD experts out there? Please help.....thanks!

Usually the setting will vary depending on the model number. You can move it and see how it reacts. The one thing I would look at is the squirt out of the nozzles. If it is weak the pump cup could be worn. A lot of times I have just replaced the pump and stretch the spring. What is your timing set at?

‘having same issue with same carb. Noticed this when checking float levels and it looks like the plunger doesn’t move when on accelerator. Not sure why. Not trying to take over thread but you’re not alone
 
Most decent rebuild kits include a chart with settings by year, model or similar differentiators. That's a good place to start. Make sure the plunger is in good shape and not shrunk away from the wall of the fuel well. Ethanol can kill a new plunger pretty quickly if it's not ethanol compatible. Many old kits are not.

The timing question is right on as well. Might try a little more lead as long as you don't hear detonation.

I'm no expert but have had good luck with those. The Stromberg versions I found more difficult to sort out.

Id start with adding more stroke to the accelerator pump. If that doesn't help look down the carb while opening the throttle to see how quick the pump shot comes on. Might need to bend some linkage to bring it on sooner. Don't go crazy though.
 
If you have access to a FSM (Factory Service Manuals) for your vehicle, it is an EXCELLENT source for all the setting dimensions and innitial setup adjustments. You did not mention the year and model of your ride. 318 poly engines last appeared as all '66 models and early '67 production; when the LA 318 was introduced. I had a LA 318 in my '67 Belvidere II and it came with a STROMBERG WWC3 carb. The two carbs are 1 1/4" stud spacing, similar air flow capacity but use entirely different setup adjustments. The Carter BBD carb uses step up rods for fuel mixture control and the STROMBERG WWC3 uses fixed metering jets and a vacuum operated "power valve" system to enhance the fuel mixture. Just asking......are you sure of your carb?....Because of the differences are significant. PM me if I can help further.

UPdate to my '66 POly carburetor Carter BBD issues post: I ended up having to bend the plunger linkage rod and use the maximum stroke adjustment holes. Essentially, giving the plunger more stroke upon acceleration. The problem is 95% fixed. A little more adjustment may still be needed. But I think I've solved the problem. Thanks guys.
