Carburetor wizard…or someone that knows more then me

Cheap,
Your rich cruise is almost certainly caused by the lack of vac ad. The engine is inefficient because the engine is not getting the cruise timing [ commonly 50-55* ] it needs; it requires more throttle opening without the extra timing & hence your rich cruise mixture. You could mess around with jetting/met rods to try & correct it, but you are really better off buying a new dist from Summit with VA & you can get them very cheaply.

Yeah I kinda figured I was getting ahead of myself, I was trying to see if I could make what I have work, but it doesn’t look like it. So I made a long shopping list, I’m completely redoing the ignition, and I decided to hit the easy button and get a brand new edelbrock 800 cfm avs2 with tuning kit, hopefully it’s as good as everyone says, and it works out

Thank you, and everyone else for your help!
:thumbsup::thankyou:

Hello everyone, I have a 4327s Carter on my 68 GTX low performance 440. I get great 13:1 afr idling. Acceleration it’s 11:1-12:1. But cruising is 10:1, I don’t know much about tuning carbs, but I do know 10:1 is little rich. I pulled #3 and #8 plug out to confirm it, here’s what they look like

The carburetor is a 3 step rod carb, it has .089 jets in the primary, I guess I should have looked at the secondary jets while I had it apart lol. And it has .065x.062x.053 metering rods.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated! And let me know if I need to give more information!

u dont make any sense? where r u getting the compression #;'s from?13-1 is NOT a low performance motor !c i guess u ment 13-1 when u posted 13:1?

That service manual must be wrong with 2 step remark. The 440 carb is 3 Step rods. Good carb. Cruise would be on the rods too if the blades are open any reasonable amount. But as stated, without a vacuum advance your cruise AF would definitely be rich.
