California Car exemptions by Jay Leno

Can't you just register the cars in Montana like all the folks here on the east coast do to avoid the sales tax? I understand you just need to create an LLC with a PO box and your golden

That is fine until you get stopped by a police officer more than once.
Try explaining your location to the insurance claims agent in the event of a traffic accident.

In Commiefornia, you have to use a “California approved” cat to pass smog. When I called one of the major cat manufacturers and asked what’s special about the CA approved cats, the guy replied “ nothing, other than we paid $5 grand for each cat to be certified for a particular vehicle application”. Nothing but another commiefornia shakedown and self perpetuating jobs program. One thing you discover when you escape is the literally dozens of ways you’re getting hit with insidious taxes. Beautiful state, my home for 60 years, but enough is enough.

I really love that Texas stopped the BS on getting an older vehicle inspected for anything! My newest vehicle is a 97 2500 diesel, then a 96 Dakota and a 95 Dakota. The only thing wrong with the Dakotas is the dang wiper bushings. Both of them broke over 6 months ago and I absolutely hate replacing them. The 95 has done it several times and the 96 was once. I don't drive them much but it sucks when caught out in a rain. Keeping the windshield waxed helps a lot but not having to fix them for inspection is another plus.....plus not having to swap out the straight pipe on the 95 is a plus too

How does one identify a California cat from a non-California cat. If the vehicle calls for a cat or 2 and it has said equipment in place who’s to say its not compliant?

Smog/sniff test??

They are stamped with a C.A.R.B EO number. No number no pass, even if you pass the sniffer with flying colors. Best part is you get to pay 300-400% price premium for those stinkin’ numbers. Functionally, a 49 state cat is physically and functionally identical to a Commiefornia cat.

Crazy. So even factory cats have a carb number stamped?

I don’t know if a factory car has that, I think it’s just easily identifiable as an oem cat so it’s called good. I had to replace a melted cat once, it was before things went full crazy but it was still more expensive than a non Cali one. Smog tech gets under or grabs a mirror to look.

Also had a car that had its pellet type converter replaced with the modern type by the previous owner, it was not a CARB one. Luckily when the tech noticed I told him this is how I bought it he just stopped talking about it.

No factory oem cats are exempt since they , in theory, were already commiefornia compliant when the vehicle was new.
Ya so inspectors are expected to know what every factory cat looks like? I say if the replacement was done properly. I wonder how anyone would know different?

Maybe because it looks much newer than the rest of the exhaust?

Replacement cats pretty easy to spot, plus factory ones have oem numbers. I successfully camouflaged a replacement on my wife’s sequoia by wrapping it with the original heat shields and wiping mud on it and the welds. Once the mud baked on it looked pretty legit. Passed a couple 2yr inspections but got caught on the third.

I agree, while overall I fit the typical political demographic for a Californian, not sure if saying exactly which party turns this too political or not so use your imagination, I still think I can see common sense and figure out if the leadership has other agendas. I don’t even really want my old car to be smog check exempt, I appreciate the improvement in air quality compared to when I was little. But how about they let me worry about what parts are on the car and they just worry if the part lets me pass the sniffer? Simple example is I cannot see a way that any modern engine swap like an LS would not run cleaner. Can I just put it in and get tested? Nope. Have to get it checked by a ref and certified, common sense would be throw it on the rollers at an reg smog shop every couple of years and if there is a failure I fix the issue. No extra hassle or money for a ref.
I know oddly specific example that illustrates what I would like to do with my vette
Clarity on the motivation of the actors at play with making arbitrary draconian rules are best discovered IMO by who the lobbyists are and who employs them.
