400 budget build

I have a complete 440 that I am saving, checked the crank, not drilled for a manula trans. I have another 440 crank, checked it too, not drilled for a manual trans.
save the complete motor,
use the other 440 crank, its gonna have to be rebalanced as will the rods/pistons = have them machine the pilot as well.
this is gonna let you use the Light pistons for the 400,instead of the slugs, which of course is gonna rev Way faster.

im in the same boat, ever since i read that tech article/the whole thing, ive been researching how to get a 451 put together partswise on the cheap but done = Balanced Correctly.

So much for the budget build. I pulled the 505 out this weekend and started thinking. I was going to use an old cam and lifter set I have along with a pair of 452's in the refreshed 400. So I'm thinking, why dont I put the top end from the 505 on the 400. cam and all?

PP240 heads, Harland Sharp rocker set up, Comp 234/240 @50, 543/540 lift, hydraulic roller. Will need shorter push rods.

All this on 9.?:1 400. What say you? Too much, just right, waste of time?

I say, why not.

Too much? No, maybe just “much”

Waste of time. No way.

My prediction, it will be just fine. It’s full power potential will likely not be realized because it will want to go to 7000 rpm, and it’s unlikely the valve train will cooperate.

I have a worn out 72 400. I need it to replace my 505 while it is out of the car getting refreshed. The 400 is stripped down to the bare block ready to go to the machine shop. I would like to just do a rings and bearings refresh if possible. The cylinder bores have some ridge, the cross hatch is gone. Surprisingly the bearings are not worn through which I expected based on the amount of crud inside the engine. The machinist will tell me if I can rering or if it will need an overbore.

So wanting to do it on the cheap, rering is first choice. Back to the 7:1 compression pistons and 195 HP. If that is not an option Summit has a .020" over KB piston kit that will bring the compression up to 9:1+. $700 for the kit. So for the magic question, What kind of HP gain over stock with these pistons?

The rest of this 400 build is using junk I already have for the B engine.

Holley carb, Edelbrock Performer 383 intake, 1 7/8" long tubes, refreshed 452 heads, Summit 6401 cam 298/303, Lift .466/.488.

What say you?
Hot Rod Magazine (also shows up in MT I think) did an engine build in an article titled "Chrysler 400 B-series-Hemi Power At Half The Cost. Firstly....I'm just the messenger regarding the Hemi reference! It's dated 6/12/2012. Chrysler 400 B-series - Hemi Power At Half The Cost

I bought a 72 RR a year ago that supposedly has this same engine build in it. The only difference is that my build has a 650 Street Brawler Holley on a Street Dominator intake. It actually pulls pretty decently, but I'm going to verify what it's putting out in a few weeks on a dyno for a baseline. Interestingly, I can get up to 40 total timing and not ping. I put it back down to 38. That's on 92. It has a MSD system in it and I've not really taken the time to dig into the potential of limiters in the distributor etc., that may affect this seeming phenomenon. Yes, I have checked my light to another high quality light.

Truthfully, I don't have expertise whatsoever in engine builds. But I know someone on this board who does! But at this point the car is up for sale and I don't feel like investing any more time etc., into it to see why it can run the high timing it does without pinging. I don't know if that's related to the build or what. Basic hand written numbers provided to me were:

Bore 4.372
Stroke 3.38
Deck Ht 9.980

From a seat of the pants of feel, it certainly feels like a low 14 sec or better car and pulls pretty strong in the mid to upper range. Again, I'm no expert, but I have owned my share of stock Mopar muscle and have a general feel for their stock levels of performance and thought I would share the article about the 400 build that is in my car.

I submitted too soon.

Bore 4.372
Stroke 3.38
Deck Ht 9.98
Head 81.5 CC
Pistons -6 CC (whatever that means)
Compression 10:1
406 CI

I have pictures of the engine build but no receipts, so can't verify any of this. I may do a compression check at some point for grins, but like I say, I'm selling and looking for something else.
