Finally got around to installing the 727 trans and torque converter. Used but supposedly recently rebuilt. Now the TC pattern didn't bolt up to the flex plate correctly. Mine is a 4 leg plate and one bolt hole is slightly off from the others. Turns out the one I bought is a Chevrolet TC. Bastard is 600 miles away. All the bolt holes are radially semetric. Bastard is 600 miles away So now I need a new TC. I don't need anything fancy. Like a high stall or fancy brand name. It a '71Charger with a 383 4bbl. Reccomendations on something that works without dropping big $$$. Ads talk about non lock-up. (Do I need this or maybe don't want it?) Sorry, I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to transmissions.

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like it. With the hundreds, no, thousands of members on these forums, there is no reason why you should go off half cocked and uneducated and pull the trigger on the wrong convertor. Just sayin. I felt the need to chew your *** a bit. Educate yourself!

Did you rotate it and try the bolts 4 times? A chevy TC don't even have a ring gear and I don't think they would even install into a 727 so show us what you have before buying something else.

A Gm convertor would not even go into a Torqueflite
in my opinion. Plus, not having a starter ring on the
convertor would be a dead give away.

A picture of the TC would be very helpful.

I'm guessing he never ever pulled a Mopar apart but heck, I'm not a GM guy but knew about that one!

I seem to recall a 727 thread about this car where none of the advice was taken.

A simple Google search will reveal when Chrysler started using lockup TC's.

Further digging will reveal the following table on stall speeds, but use it as a guide at this point. Refer to your FSM for other info.

If it has a smooth end input shaft it uses a lock up only. And vice versa

Unless you have a lock up transmission, You don't need and can't use a lock up converter. Homework again.

This is a joke right?

The fact 3 bolts went in means you have it indexed wrong. That's all.

A GM converter won't go into a 727, everything is different
A GM converter will not bolt to a mopar flexplate.
Mopar has 2 different flexplates for a 727

Trying to get the pictures to load. I'm an excellent product designer and petroleum geologist but at 68 never a mechanic except basic stuff.

Friendly advise, speaking from experience. Do your research and then ask the MOPAR gurus on here when you have questions. It could prevent you from doing something like I did. I ordered a $1500 set of alum BB heads (open chamber) oops! Then had to order a set of custom domed pistons to get to the 10.5:1 CP I was shooting for. Could have avoided all that with a little more research and a few well placed questions.

These things happen... i once ordered a Posi unit for my car and they sent me some "Sure-grip" crap.... not what i ordered!!

Please post some pics... GM is 3 bolts, mopar 4.. someone above mentioned the offset bolt but didn't explain it well..

Mopar TC's bolts aren't symmetrical so they only line up in one position (which is awesome if you don't mark it before putting it in) SOO... you end up putting a bolt in 1 hole.. spin the motor over and watch to see if they all line up now.. Nope? take that bolt out.. move 1 hole and try again... til you get the right one.

It sounds stupid but it's so people can't put a balanced TC on in the wrong position (i assume)

If you ever have it out and the flexplate out line it up on the tc and mark it like this.. no more guessing..
